KATE editor for Linux : Some emoticons don’t display properly

Hi,

  • KATE editor for Linux : Some emoticons don’t display properly
Example : :heart_decoration: is not displaying properly in Kate. But is displayed well in XED text Editor.

  • Test I did:

    1. copy NotoColorEmoji-Regular.ttf to .local/share/fonts
    2. fc-cache -f -v
    3. restart Kate
      But still same issue.

Can someone please help ?

Kind Regards,
Jo

My Config:

  • Linux Mint-22(Wilma)-6.8.0-48-generic - noble
  • Kate version 23.08.5 (system, not flatpak)
  • KDE Frameworks Version 5.115.0
  • Qt Version 5.15.13 (built against 5.15.13)

Hi - Out of curiosity, have you tried / can you try using the Flatpak to see if it works there? The version of Kate included in Linux Mint 22 is the one included in Ubuntu 24.04, which is three major releases behind the current version and based on underlying software libraries (like Qt version 5) that are not officially supported anymore.

The Flathub version of Kate is current with this past week’s 24.08.3 release

I second your recommendation.
While I don’t use the Flatpak verison, or use Linux Mint (I use Manjaro with unstable repository) so I do use the very latest release of Kate, Qt and so on, and I don’t seem to have the issue @jo2024 has.

Hi @johnandmegh,

Thanks for your answer.
I installed flatpak install flathub org.kde.kate,
But unfortunately, I have the same issue.

I switch to the Flatpak version, hoping they will solve this in the futur.

Hi @darryl,
Thanks for your answer.
Unfortunately, I have no time to switch to Manjaro, because I am in a professional environment with a lot of checkboxes already checked.

Well, after trying some features of Kate Flatpak 24.08.3, I notice for example that :

  1. when I drag and drop some files into Kate, the files are empty.
  2. I don’t find the directory location of my sessions

I think I’m going to revert back to Kate System 23.8.5 and wait some time. Because It seems more stable.
Thanks anyway  :grinning:

Hi, sorry I wasn’t recommending you switch, rather I just saying that with the latest version (non-flatpak) that your problem doesn’t seem to exist for me.

@darryl Thanks :+1:
