Kate (old version): when do configuration changes take effect (multiple instances open)

I’m using an old version of kate (sorry :frowning: – 3.8.4: Using KDE, Development Platform 4.8.4 (4.8.4)) on one of my computers.

Even so, I expect that my question (and the answer) applies to all versions of kate, including the most recent.

The feature that puts a green or red vertical line in front of lines that have been changed is not enabled (~“show line modification markers”).

I have several instances of kate open, all with quite a few files.

Making the change in one instance didn’t take effect. ( I checked, “Apply”ed, and “OK’ed it.) What must I do to make the changes take effect? I’m assuming one of:

  • close and re-open that instance
  • close and re-open all instances
  • reboot

Note: I want it to take effect in all instances, I’d prefer not to reboot (or close and re-open even one instance, let alone all instances).

In other instances, changes take affect after restarting Kate. Current instance will show the changes immediately.

Thanks! It turns out it actually worked immediately (in the instance I changed it in), but I had a poor choice of colors which kept me from seeing the red and the green :frowning:
