Kate - Win11 - Install a theme from KDE Store

The theme in question is: zenburn - eye-gentle Kate color scheme - KDE Store – the download is a .tar.gz file that, unless I failed my spot check, doesn’t have a .colors or .theme file in it, so there’s nothing for me to throw at the Import button in Kate.

Some Googling on how to install a theme from the store turned up:

https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/pmphsp/how_to_install_themes_from_kde_store/ – “It isn’t possible” and “You don’t usually install stuff like that.” I’m pretty sure this question is about a more wide-ranging theme installation than just a color scheme for one app though, but it does say “you can just extract it to the right directory.” Where is the right directory?

Google’s AI was as helpful as it always is, and suggested I extract it to %AppData%\color-schemes. Like, just the color-schemes folder in AppData, not the one inside the Kate folder in AppData, which isn’t actually there. I don’t know Kate’s folder is. It isn’t in Program Files, because I guess installing things to Program Files is so circa Windows 98 and we’re in 2026 now and I’m a dinosaur that has to learn where things go on a computer all over again and I just as well shrivel up like a prune and crumble into dust.

–sigh-- I eventually found C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\KDEe.V.Kate_25.1201.11022.0_x64__7vt06qxq7ptv8\bin\data\color-schemes but that only has BreezeLight/Dark/Classic.colors in it, and again, I don’t have a colors file to install. That’s the only folder location I’ve found that remotely looks like the right one, and I don’t think I have what it’s looking for.

The included README file suggests I can install manually by appending a file (katescehemearc) that I also haven’t been able to locate…

That theme was last updated 18 years ago and is for KDE 3.

lol, well that certainly explains my frustration. The post I originally found it from certainly wasn’t that old and I didn’t think to check the dates after that. Thank you!
