KDE Connect SMS

I am running Kubuntu 21.04.1 with KDE Connect SMS 23.08.5. I have a question regarding the compose function. When composing a new message, pressing the Enter/Return key actually sends the message. I would prefer if pressing Enter/Return merely inserted a new line so I can format the text message into a more readable format.

I don’t see a configuration option to change the function of the Enter key. Is there one?? Please advise…

Thanks and regards.

still works that way 24.05.2

i agree it should work like every other SMS app and give you a new line when you hit return/enter.

it should only send when you hit the send button.

Shift+Enter is the convention for this. To explain:

This comes from old IBM terminals. The Enter key, would enter your data from your terminal’s input buffer, into the mainframe. The Return key would return to the start of the line and then move to a new line.

Eventually the keys became one, which is why the name and meaning is a bit blurry. Since it no longer has a dedicated key, in order to get to Return, you shift the Enter key - or vice versa if you have a less common keyboard which actually has a Return key rather than Enter.

So, when we have an input which could likely use either, the convention is to use Enter to Enter the data (ie, the OK/Send button) and Return (Shift+Enter) to add a new line. It works in lots of apps, give it a shot.

the issue seems to be carrying over the full desktop and keyboard way of thinking onto an interface that is geared toward a phone or tablet way of working with a virtual keyboard that only has a RETURN key.

if i’m thinking that i’m sending an SMS text then my expectation is that it should work the same as on my phone.

namely: the “enter” or RETURN button sends a new line and the only way to actually SEND is to click on the paper airplane icon.

i also notice that accessibility features like being able to tab between different parts and menus of the UI are not functional on KDE connect SMS.

perhaps this should be a feature request.

Yes, this does indeed work and I appreciate the feedback. However, as an old ex-IBMer who used to have a 3270 terminal on my desk and Linux didn’t exist, I have to wonder why any Linux/Unix developer in the 21st century would even consider falling back to the Enter/Return sequence AND not provide a config option to change it…ESPECIALLY since prior releases of KDE Connect did not exhibit this trait. Just wondering out loud…
