KDE kickoff (application launcher) not working correct

kickoff (application launcher) not working correct!!
What I have:
intel core i5 12450h
3050ti laptop (nvidia proprietary)
16gb ram
kde plasma 6.3.0
kernel: 6.13.2-arch1-1 (64-bit)
wayland session(on x11 all working good)

no strange startup logs in systd, and no strange startup logs in journalctl either

I used to have arch linux on lts kernel, I decided to upgrade and put plasma in general. Immediately after I installed arch this problem was not there, but after I installed something (some of the packages), I started to have terrible problems with this menu, and not only. Reinstallation helped up to a certain point, then everything became the same.
BUT!!! please note that at the session x11 such is not present

can anyone help? or perhaps knows where to turn to?

Hi!

The cleanest troubleshooting approach here - based on that description - would seem to be removing the packages that were installed in between the issue not occurring and occurring, then re-installing them each individually until you observe the problem pop up.

Am I interpreting your video correctly that the issue you’re observing is some graphical glitches at the bottom of the Application Launcher menu? Is the menu appearing and disappearing that quickly on its own, or for that video are you repeatedly pressing the Super key?

Hi!

Yes, you read that right, about the super button I press.
But the problem is not only in the appllications launcher, but the problem is completely in wayland. It’s just that this launcher shows these artifacts the best.
When I switch to x11 session, all artifacts disappear.
It’s just that before, when I customized everything, there were no such big problems, and in general as such there were no ARTEFACTS.

About solving the problem. I would very much hate to remove about 200 packages and after I put one of them - reboot the system . It is too long.
What other solution can there be but to tear down 200 packages.

In the previous time, I had this problem after installing kvantum qt (a program for customizing themes of qt applications)
That time I completely demolished all the plasma configs, kvantum configs, and many other things - as a result, I reinstalled arch linux out of desperation.

About nvidia drivers - I tried with them, and tried without them, the problem still remains the same

For the future. I will be grateful for any help from your side. Thanks

I’d imagine there are some packages you can safely rule out - for example, if you installed an OpenSSH server package, I highly doubt that would cause graphical glitches. On the other hand, some would theoretically be very likely related - for example, if you’re installing any third-party theming software like Kvantum, graphics drivers, app toolkits/frameworks, etc.

Does the issue occur on a fresh, newly-created user profile?

Are you having the desktop render using the NVIDIA card, or using the integrated graphics?

Overall, if:

  • The issue doesn’t occur when you first set up your system
  • It does occur after installing software
  • There are no entries in the system journal that give good clues
  • Others here don’t recognize the issue and have a more specific lead

Then personally, I would proceed by starting from the known-good baseline and installing likely suspect packages - watching what dependencies are pulled in as well - to see when it begins. Troubleshooting could then be focused there.

I think that’s 499982 – black rectangle glitch with kickoff open animation

Hello, everyone, again

The whole problem was in the composer, or plasma effects (read below).

Thank you so much for helping us avoid this terrible bug.
Indeed, if you turn off the blur in the desktop effects, everything works fine.

However, I am using blur. And so I want to ask, is it worth leaving this topic open until this bug is fixed? Or is it better to close it?

Just in case people like me didn’t have an answer to their question and want to find an answer, this thread might help them?

In any case, I want to thank you for your work, your desire to help me, and in general for your quick response and assistance.

Good question - the best way for future forum visitors to be able to find helpful information quickly is to click the checkbox on the reply that answers the topic’s question:
