KDE Menu Editor missing application & using directory structure

Hi,

I get struggle with KDE Menu Editor for 2 points :
First, i don’t know if it’s a bug or missconfiguration from me, but some application don’t show up. For example, audacious which have an audacious.desktop file inside /usr/share/applications but when i try to search it under kde menu editor, i get no reference. Here is the desktop entry in case of problem on .desktop file.

Secondary, for me the way how KDE (i don’t know if it’s specific to KDE) organise the “start” menu is really complicated and don’t allow easy organise like windows for example.
What i would like is to have the menu editor exactly as a directory structure which i could organise with manual linking to .desktop file, or using specific file which link to the desktop file.
For example, i have 9 .desktop file for nomachine, i only use one. With directory structure, i only need to delete the not used file and that’s all. But on kde menu editor, i got some inside .hidden, some inside “lost & found” which i can’t definitively remove.
I don’t know if that exist, i tried to search for it, but didn’t find anything.

Thanks in advance,

Audacious shows up in mine.

Furthermore, you can have anything you like in that menu editor:

Make anything you want:

Say you want something for that nomachine. Dunno what the commandlines are for nomachine, but you can make an entry for nomachine which points at exactly that one outta nine file.

in the menu editor, go to settings > config and choose to show hidden entries

if you search you will likely find them in the hidden or lost and found folder.

just uncheck the hidden box for the application and it will be visible in the menu (you might also have to cut and paste it into a folder that is visible.

generally if you make a copy of an application, it will hide the original one and only show the one in your ~/.local/share/applications directory.

Yes, i can make my own desktop, but seems more easy to use the one from package. As well, i need to hide all others and move to hidden part.

Audacious is not present in applications-kmenuedit.menu

The “show hidden entries” is check, i can see others hidden entries.

I have another example, i installed QDirStat, i get opposite problem, it show in menu editor (not hidden) but not in start menu :

As you can see, there is big difference beetween menu editor and “reality”, none are hidden. Total commander don’t show too. But it’s wine, so maybe there is a problem with .desktop, didn’t check.

(virtual box 2 is hidden, it’s normal to not show)

But there is no other way than using applications-kmenuedit.menu ?
I already remake all start menu 3 times

If audacious is installed it WILL show up in editor. If it runs from a terminal it’ll show in editor’s search box.
Just for the sake of the topic I installed qdirstat.
It’s right there, no matter the menu I use. And viewing from your screenshot…it’s right there!
Not sure what you’re doing man.

Secondary screenshot show the “outils” part from start menu. As you can see, there is no QDirStat.

you should find a 1:1 correspondence between the apps shown in the menu editor and what you find in

~/.local/share/applications/
/usr/share/applications/

if there are duplicates in either directory then they will be marked as “hidden” by the menu editor and will not appear in the app menu.

if you rename or edit anything from the root owned directory then it will appear in your /home as owned by your and the root version will be marked hidden.

you can also try to run this to see if it helps

# to repair the application menu try running
kbuildsycoca5

or 6 if you are on plasma6

kbuildsycoca6 --menutest --noincremental

Don’t fnd audacious too

So, after some reading because it’s new for me, the applications-kmenuedit.menu use standard free desktop menu spec. So, because i didn’t find a program already made, i will make my own, reading a directory structure et generating the applications-kmenuedit.menu
Will be faster i think
