KDE Plasma 6.4.2 hard crashes when logging in after switching monitors (Wayland + Nvidia)

Hi all,

I just bought a new monitor and was really excited to try it out! It’s the ASUS XG27ACDNG. When I switched my old monitor for this new one and tried logging in at SDDM, the screen when black and was completely locked up. I thought to try this in a separate TTY, so after rebooting, I ran startplasma-wayland; same result!

Now, some information about my system: I use an NVidia GPU (RTX 4080) and am on the latest drivers (575.64.03). I have a multi-monitor setup and use my iGPU on my CPU for audio. This new monitor I got is advertised to have a refresh rate of 360Hz.

Luckily, I was able to get an X session working just fine and had no issues (even at 360Hz [important for later]).

After much trial and error, I was able to get a Wayland session working again by switching from DisplayPort 1.4 to 1.2 on my monitor. This has the unfortunate side effect of me not being able to use the 360Hz refresh rate of my monitor, instead maxing out at 179.96Hz. Additionally, if I enable HDR in Wayland for my new monitor, that also leads to a hard crash!

So with my new monitor, I cannot use the 360Hz refresh rate or HDR of my new monitor in Wayland.

I’d love to help get this resolved for a future Plasma release so I can use my monitor to its fullest capabilities!

Cheers!

I reported this as a bug: Wayland session hard-freezes with ASUS XG27ACDNG when using DisplayPort 1.4 or enabling HDR
