For years now, been a KDE user from the start, I’ve been wondering why backing up (base) config files is so hard… Okay, okay, experienced users know their ways to find out, however i’m currently looking at the “new user” perspective.
First let me first define “base KDE Settings” : these are all settings under “system settings” in KDE. No KDE apps or other software setting … just the system settings.
KDE developers knows best where these settings are stored and they might change over time during development of KDE. Some things DO change over time.
So here’s my idea :
is it possible to ship KDE with a list of the settings-locations of KDE’s system settings or make it downloadable via invent.kde.org. This in a form like the info in the link below. From there on we can create backup files (like .kbp for example)
After the release of Plasma 6.7 i do want to take a shot at this subject again. (btw : awesome release)
New release, new (extra) system settings and (perhaps) new files for these settings.
What i do like to see from KDE is a list of system settings and file locations. It can be a list shipped with KDE Plasma or it can be a list downloadable from invent.kde.org.
Please take a look at my example posted above for the what KDE can present these files.
KDE developers knows best per unit or setting what setting is used and where it is stored. Hopefully KDE devops find this idea useful. This makes planning a backup much easier for the enduser. Now we all have to look and watch the file changes in order to find the correct (possible new) setting.
