Confiming this fixes Kdenlive 24.12.0 released - #10 by Ron

It doesn’t fix Draw Box being broken in the old saved effect stacks, but at least I can create and save a new copy to work around that

It seems I can still crash it by doing the opposite though, trying to drag the built-in effect below a bin effect.

First thank you for this incredible software.

The flatpack version of the new Kdenlive does not come with the new HSL effects. Just the appimage

Y’know, I’d been wondering why I have been getting a lot less crashes lately. Things got a lot better since December’s release. Thanks for all the efforts.

This new version does seem a lot more stable. I was getting a few random crashes, usually when saving a project. All gone with the new version. Thanks for your great work guys.

Could it be that the great HSL filters have been removed again? That would be a great pity.
They are still present in the AppImage, but are missing in the installation of the repository 24.12.1.

Check your MLT version. They came with an update to it …

You are absolutely right! I just did the MLT update to 7.30. Now the HSL filters are there.

How did you know that?

The source code told me. The appimage was released with a MLT git snapshot that contained several fixes including that addition. But the first MLT release containing them only happened a couple of days ago.

An example of why we recommend to use the binaries by the project rather than distro packages.

And what about the flatpak from flathub? It delivers Kdenlive 24.12.1 with mlt 7.28.

EDIT: And so does appimage 24.12.1

The flatpak version is not delivered by us although we do contribute to maintaining it. I want to try to improve this though eventually. I’ve just committed an upgrade to MLT,

That is on us, we will update it for next release.

The AppImage 24.12.1 and even the older versions use an MLT that is still displayed as 7.28, but has no problems with the AV filters because it is already an improved MLT.

In my opinion, the Kdenlive AppImage version has always been the best for a long time.

That released with a git snapshot of MLT that still identifies as 7.28.0, but has ~40 patches to it, including the ones that added these filters. MLT 7.30 was only tagged and released by upstream 2 days ago.

The quality of distro packages is always going to depend on the individual packager, and to some extent what distro releases they are targetting … (good luck satisfying the current KF6 requirement on any stable distro release right now for instance).

And to be fair, systems using the real MLT 7.30 release now have some fixes that aren’t yet in the appimage too : ) – but it’s also fair to say problems with distro packages are things you should get your distro packager to support. If it’s working correctly in the appimage, then the problem needs triage at the distro packager level before bringing it here.

Any packager who wants to make sure they are following the appimage for version parity as closely as possible would probably be well served by following the dependency bread crumbs from here: craft-blueprints-kde/kde/kdemultimedia/kdenlive/kdenlive.py at master · KDE/craft-blueprints-kde · GitHub

That will tell you exactly what release versions were used and tested, and where git snapshots were used, what commit they were taken from.

Thanks on the pointer for the updated mlt version, updating Haiku’s package while I’m at it, HSL filters show up fine in 24.12.1
