Is there a difference, nowdays in May-2025, between Kdenlive on Windows vs macOS vs Linux?
Specifically there are 2 variables that are interesting here:
Features:
For example, in 1 OS Kdenlive is more full of features,
and in another OS it may take more time to catch up and have all features developed there too,
because development started there later.
Stability and Bugs:
For example, in 1 OS Kdenlive is currently working very well,
where in another OS it is less stable currently.
(for the same reason as in variable 1)
This will help me choose which OS to run Kdenlive on.
The code base for all three platforms officially supported (Linux, Windows, macOS) is the same. There is no difference in functionality available, layout, UI, etc.
This said, Kdenlive is depending on a few things outside of the dev team’s control, so overall performance and stability may be different across the OS simply because of the different architectures and what other (system) software is installed. And there are instances where something works in Linux and Windows but not in macOS, or in any other combination.
I would base my choice of OS not on just functionality or performance of a single application. There are other things to consider as well. Just my 2c.
Right..
But assume someone has several computers that he can use, with a different OS on each,
then he can choose which one to use Kdenlive, if there’s a difference in how it actually works, between them.
Again: no difference in functionality or appearance.
Things to consider:
How well do you know Linux? Flatpak is running in a sandbox (security, stability) which isolates Kdenlive from certain things. Using tools like Flatseal or fiddling with Flatpak using the terminal can mitigate some of the restrictions.
Which distro and DE are you running? There are some reports about Fedora and Kdenlive not really liking each other.
Which version of Windows are you using? Win10 may have some issues Win11 doesn’t.
Are you dual/triple booting , or do you have the OS’es on identical computers? The hardware on the computers will play a bigger role I would guess- available hardware that is, Win and Mac consumes way more resources than most Linux distros, leaving more available resources for your video-editing on the Linux setup. When in doubt; always choose Linux
