Kdenlive Portable vs Installer, on Windows

Hi all

Kdenlive is available on Windows with 2 versions: Portable and Installer.

I usually prefer Portable versions of programs, over Installer versions,

but I wonder:

What do I “lose” If I choose the Portable version of Kdenlive instead of the Installer?

For example registered File Extensions, or things like that?

Thank you

no idea about teh file type extensions… probably them are not registered on installer version (i manually associate the project file to Kndelive) …

BTW usually i use the installable because there are no added registry entry… if you are worried about files copied in unknown places, this is an totally remover of kdenlive for windows : www.wcn.it/kdenliveremover.zip

here an updated topic:

usually installed software are granted of administrative rights… this mean.. saving and reading where you want (not on system areas or root) and maybe Kdenlive can be suggested by windows on the “OPEN BY” menu speeding up associations.

Hi Bartoloni

Thank you for your reply.

Actually the reasons I usually like Portable versions over Installer, are these:

  1. I put the Portable program on D:, that way If I ever need to format C: and reinstall Windows, then I don’t need to re-install all portable programs, since they are already on D:, and already with their settings and everything (which consumes even more time than installing a program)

  2. If I need to update a program, I don’t need to Uninstall+Install it,

(and I also don’t need to take the risk of “installing over”, which I never liked..),

I simply need to rename the programs’s folder to Kdenlive_OLD, and extract the new ZIP. (+Copying setting files from the old folder)

For these reasons, IMHO, Portable versions are always preferable.

I just wonder If there are specific disadvantages here,

but you said for example that Kdenlive does not register File Extensions even in the Installer version, which is surprising..

Hopefully a developer of Kdenlive will see this thread, and maybe add some info regarding if there are diffences.

Since version 26.04.0 the Windows installer version registers Kdenlive files and shows the Kdenlive icon on *.kdenlive files. I think that’s the only difference to the standalone version.

Thank you very much Eugen.

So this it means I can use the Portable version,

and register the .kdenlive extension myself.

The benefits that I get from this (vs using the installer) are:

  1. If I ever need to format C:, then Kdenlive (which resides on D:) is still there after the format, with all its configuration.

  2. If I ever want to update Kdenlive, I don’t need to Uninstall+Install, I simply Unzip a folder.
