KMail doesn't send emails; stuck in outbox, no errors

How do I get emails to send in KMail/Kontact? I have my identities set up with the proper outgoing accounts and I cannot send any emails through GMail, Outlook, or GMX. All my outgoing emails just languish in the Local Folders > Outbox forever. I’ve even tried doing File > Send queued messages but nothing happens. How do I get KMail to be a functional mail client to send emails?

Let me know any debug/details I can get for you.

The official KMail troubleshooting chapter has a page for exactly this symptom - mail stuck in the Outbox with no error. Their remedy: quit KMail fully with kquitapp kmail (a normal File > Quit is not enough), then open akonadiconsole, go to the Agents tab, right-click the Mail Dispatcher Agent and abort its current action, and afterwards use File > Send Queued Messages. If it still sits there, toggle the Mail Dispatcher Agent’s offline/online state in that same menu; if that doesn’t help either, the docs point at dbus, where a plain reboot is the fix. The Mail Dispatcher Agent is the component that actually dispatches queued mail, so it being stuck fits your “no provider works, no error anywhere” picture.

Here’s a link to the troubleshooting page, if you want to read what it actually says:

No luck with that troubleshooting page. Kquitapp doesn’t even exist anymore, I think it’s kquitapp6 now and that doesn’t work when I type kmail after it. Even restarted my computer and messages still remain in outbox

Since you already restarted the computer, the kquitapp part is covered - a full restart quits everything anyway, no need to hunt for kquitapp6. The step from that page worth doing next is the Mail Dispatcher Agent: open akonadiconsole via KRunner or Konsole, go to the Agents tab, right-click Mail Dispatcher Agent and abort its current action, then try File > Send Queued Messages in KMail again; if it still stalls, toggle the agent’s online/offline state in that same context menu. The docs say you will most likely get an error message popping up when you abort - if you do, paste the text here, because it should tell us whether the dispatcher is stuck or the sending accounts themselves are failing. The stuck dispatcher is still just the docs’ hypothesis for your symptom, but that error text should narrow it down quickly.

I’m not sure if this would help, but you could try clearing the Akonadi cache: in KMail menu Folder > Clear Akonadi Cache… KMail will then resync your emails.

Just to clarify, did it ever work with these accounts + KMail?

I had the same problem when I was setting up KMail (and I also had it with Evolution long ago) and I just had to go through all settings again (IMAP and SMTP) and make sure they’re configured properly.

What worked for me was opening the Akonadi console (using the command `akonadiconsole` or Ctrl + Space → “Akonadi console”), selecting the ‘Agents’ tab, toggling the connection status of all the agents that were paused/stopped and, finally, restarting the mail dispatcher agent. As soon as I did this, the emails that were queued were sent automatically. I hope this helps you.
