Kmymoney - Need some help. Kmymoney doesn’t always find my financial institution downloads. They go to my Download folder, but Kmymoney doesn’t always find them. What do I need to do differently?

When you say it doesn’t find them, how is kMyMoney looking for them? What steps do you follow?

Also, it may be useful for the developers to know the version you are using. Can you provide that?

jessevarela - When I download transactions from a bank it downloads like it should to my download folder on my computer. KMyMoney looks in the download folder, and opens the file in KMyMoney as it should, but about half the time it does not.

@CoastalJack Maybe, before we go into any more details a few questions that should help us narrowing the problem and not chase dead things.

Which operating system (Linux/Windows, version not so important)
Which version of KMyMoney (see Help/About KMyMoney)
Which file format does your download have? OFX, CSV, QIF, ???

Also, it would be very helpful, if you can explain exactly how you do the download (browser, tool, ?) and what you do with or within KMyMoney to load (import) the data. I understood, that the file ends up in your Download folder but then I am lost because KMyMoney does not search for files on its own. You must be doing something and we are interested in all the steps this something comprises and the programs you use to do that.

Hi ipwizard - Here are a few more details, and steps that I go through.

Windows 10 operating system
KMyMoney version 5.0.6.8.1
QFX

Here are my steps:

Open KMyMoney and chose the bank account I want to update. The KMyMoney icon appears in the task bar.
Sign on to the bank account and open the account.
In the bank account click the download button choosing Quicken(QFX) to download.
KMyMoney then ask if this is the correct account to download. When answering “ok”, KMYMoney does one of two things. It either opens and the new updated transactions are there in the KMyMoney program, OR KMyMoney closes, and the icon in the task bar goes away.
If KMyMoney closes as above I can see the downloaded QFX file in my computer download folder.

First, your problem is not that KMM does not find the download file, it is that it crashes when trying to process it. Very different issue. The next step would be to run KMyMoney from command line. To do that you need to open a command prompt (cmd or possbly powershell, I’m not a windows user) and type the full path to kmymoney.exe. By launching it that way, instead of by clicking the icon, the program will write status messages, warnings, and errors, which may give a hint as to why it is crashing.

First, 5.0.6 is extremely old. I would start by upgrading to 5.1.3. Even if we discover why 5.0.6 crashes, the answer would be to upgrade. At this point, we are not even fixing bugs in 5.1.3, instead waiting for the releast of 5.2. Although that does not yet have a definite schedule, work on the release has begun.

ostroffjh - Thanks for your help. I’m unable to get kmymoney to run from CDM. I know the path (C:\Program Files\kmymoney5\bin\kmymoney.exe), but not getting anywhere.

Hopefully CDM was just a typo for CMD. Once you have the command prompt available, just type C:\Program Files\kmymoney5\bin\kmymoney.exe (I’m not sure if you need to/how to quote the space in “program files”). If you do that, what happens?

Doing so works great on Linux but on Windows (10 in this case) I had to install an additional tool to make the command line output visible. It’s called DebugViewPP and available on Github.

ipwizard - I downloaded version 5.1.3 of kmymoney. I was able to get my data history files loaded, but still have a problem importing from a bank. The qfx file actually does go to my download folder, but does not open into kmymoney. What can I do next ? Thanks for your help.

Please be more specific about “does not open.” If KMM does see the file, and you can select it, but KMM crashes when you click “Import” then it might be necessary to use the program ipwizard mentioned in comment #10 in order to get full output. The output you provided in comment #11 looks like startup messages that don’t matter for your problem.

ostroffjh , Thanks for the reply.
What I mean by “does not open.” is that nothing changes, or updated automatically in KMM after a download from the bank. The QFX file does come to my computer download folder, but does not open in KMM.
I did install the 5.1.3 version of KMM, but still have a problem.

To get some more clarity on this: I expect you use your favorite browser to visit the bank’s website, login, then click to download the (QFX) file. When the browser asks you what to do with it, you select open it with KMyMoney. Right? If not, please explain more precisely.

In the case described above, the transfer from the bank to your Download folder is performed by the browser and you don’t need to reassure that it works. Once the download is finished, the browser starts KMyMoney with the file to open as argument which then processes it which causes the crash to happen (application disappears from screen without changing your data file).

You can duplicate the above manually without using the browser, by starting KMyMoney using your data file as usual and then starting a second instance of KMyMoney from the command line with the downloaded QFX file as argument. In this scenario, we are interested in the logs of the tool I mentioned in my previous post of the first instance of KMyMoney (the one with your data file). The other one is not important.

ipwizart - Here is some more clarity, I hope.

"When the browser asks you what to do with it, you select open it with KMyMoney. " The bank, or my windows browser does not ask what to do with it. There is just a “Download” button. Yes, there is a download to my computer, but it is not processed by KMM. I can use the KMM import option to get the file from my download folder, and KMM is updated.

I deleted ver 5.0.6 and downloaded ver 5.1.3-eef04f1, but get similar results with KMM not automatically updating from the bank download.

When you say “KMM import option” I assume you use the OFX importer one.

This is a weird thing I’ve never seen before. The problem seems to be related to a component (QtWebEngine) we used in some versions of KMyMoney.

Can you try if the problem still persists with the latest development version of KMyMoney? That does not use QtWebEngine anymore and might do the trick. Thanks for your trials.

I’ll be happy to give it a try, but have a couple questions.

Should I completely delete ver 5.1.3-eef04fi on my computer before downloading the developer version ?
I see 2 exe versions of master 3925. Which one do i need ?

I suggest to uninstall 5.1.3 before installing the other version.
You need the one ending in .exe. The other one end in .exe.sha256. The latter is the checksum of the former and only 66 bytes long.

This version looks different but seems to work. I tested downloading with 2 of my account. So far all good.
