Konquerer: fork/branch into file-manager (not a browser)

I’m a big fan of konqueror as a file-manager. It is by far the most customizable file-manager on linux. I know because I tried them ALL!
Konqueror is also the only file-manager in linux with a bookmarks(places) toolbar.

Konqueror is unique! :birthday_cake: :unicorn:

Dolphin and Nemo have so little options and just 1 toolbar. I’m all for letting the user decide where what button goes, and make your own toolbar(s!) the way you like it. Power to the user, that sort of thing. :raised_fist:

To make this filemanager more appealing to users here are some ideas:

  • update the default settings
  • reset the default icon pack so they look more fresh (the images are already in the program! Just set those default would make this brilliant piece of software have a fresh look)
  • update the screenshots in the software manager
  • rename it a file-manager. like: Konq File Manager?
  • replace the menu-show-hide-button with the universal hamburger-menu icon.

I would like to contribute with the icon. And the default settings and default icons, if there is a settings-file for that. Is this on github?

[For some reason I am not allowed to upload images]

I’m not involved with Konqueror at all, but the repo is Network / Konqueror · GitLab Github is just a mirror. Take a look at Get Involved - KDE Community Wiki to get involved with KDE!

Konqueror is quite an old project, so I wouldn’t expect its developers to have much enthusiasm to change it into just a file manager, but you can make your changes and build it for yourself if you want.

So am I and the need for changes of it does not exist. It has all of the features needed including the one I find the most important. The ability to split the window horizontally allowing the full viewing of a file name. I have never understood the wasting of the screen real estate on wide screen monitors with going side by side vertical splitting forcing all files names, except the very short ones, to be truncated. Change for change sake is never needed in my opinion and leads to nothing but enshittification of programs and services it is done with. As happens with so many things with the chasing of the next new shinny that comes along. There is a point reached where change is no longer needed and is in fact a useless regression of the software involved.

This brilliant software. I don’t want to change it, ok maybe modernize 1 icon (hamburgermenu) and make the default setting use these arrows instead of the old once.

It would be a shame if nothing changes and great software’s development holds until it eventually becomes deprecated. Like cubicexplorer on Windows, where 10 years later still no other filemanager that even comes close. I would hate to see this senario for Konqueror, so feel a little updating would keep this project going. And I am willing to help with that.
