Ksnip safe censoring

Ksnip saves its screenshots in PNG files. However, they must be some sort of special/extended kind of format, because the files stay editable in Ksnip.

Is there a way to export the image from Ksnip which guarantees that the file wouldn’t be editable? I am thinking about this context specifically:

  1. I have a screenshot with sensitive data.
  2. I cover the sensitive data with black boxes (I already know that, if you want to be save, always use solid colours instead of blur/pixelation).
  3. The resulting PNG file, however, still contains the information that is located below those boxes. As a result, someone could open my screenshot with Ksnip and de-censor the sensitive data.

I’m surprised, I thought that PNG only have the pixels you see not layers like gimp might use.

Which tool did you use to see the earlier state of the file?

i think you must still have open your original pic… close all the tabs and reopen the redacted image with ksnip and try to select the redaction.

Yep, that’s it – the redactions are only editable when you haven’t yet closed the tab.
