TL;DR:
Accidentally upgraded to Kubuntu 25.10 Plasma 6 beta. After reboot: no login sessions, startplasma-wayland missing, kubuntu-desktop removed. Beta repo removed, but reinstall fails due to dependency conflicts. Root is on a single partition. Need help restoring stable Plasma 6.4.5 safely via TTY/Live USB.
Hi all,
I ran into a major issue after accidentally upgrading to the latest Plasma 6 beta on Kubuntu 25.10. Here’s the situation:
After reboot, the login screen shows no session options. Entering my password just loops back to the login screen.
startplasma-wayland is not found from TTY.
Kernel: 6.17.0-6-generic
I removed the beta repo and tried to reinstall kubuntu-desktop, but apt gives dependency errors that I can’t resolve.
My root partition contains everything (no separate /home).
It seems like kubuntu-desktop and some core Plasma packages got removed or mismatched after the beta reboot. I’ve tried:
Recovery mode → “Repair broken packages” (didn’t help)
apt --fix-broken install
Attempting to reinstall kubuntu-desktop
I suspect it’s a mix of leftover beta packages conflicting with the stable ones.
I’d really appreciate guidance on:
1. Safely restoring kubuntu-desktop and Plasma 6.4.5 without wiping /home.
2. Identifying which beta packages need to be downgraded.
3. Any recommended commands or procedures for fixing this via TTY or Live USB chroot.
Thanks in advance for any help!
