Kwin And Desktop Effects Crashing After Sleep

Hi there…

So i’ve been having this reoccurring issue where whenever I wake my laptop from sleep, my desktop effects are restarted.

However this often means that any open programs (except my web browser for some reason) are just… closed. No save, no recovery, nothing. It’s gotten to the point where if I know I need to walk away from the computer for any length of time I make sure to save everything and close any programs i have open myself.

And when I say just closed… I can have just… discord open and it’ll just… go away like it was never open when i come back from sleep. And I need to start the program again. It’s like it was never open at all.

Other times the entire GUI environment will crash. Task manager, widgets, taskbar icons, the desktop background, just… everything will go black. Except for an occasional broswer window that will somehow stay open but flip itself upside down. In those instances I need to do a hard reboot of the system as I can’t access any method to shut it down properly. Those are the “hold the power button until it shuts off and pray when you turn it on again” kind of crashes.

My system SEEMS to be okay even after those big crashes… but something is definitely going on.

Now I’m sure you can see why this would be a problem on a laptop!

I can’t leave anything open to continue a work session! I’m honestly not sure what’s going on, and it’s been happening for a while now and I can’t figure it out.

Everything is as up to date as I can make it as well, both using the Discover updater and via the terminal.

ALSO: this issue happened when I was on Kubuntu 22.[something] and it continued after I updated to Kubuntu 23.10

I found that switching from the Nvidia proprietary driver to the X.org Nouveau driver seems to have helped with the program closures and crashes on wake from sleep. I think I’ll stick to the Nouveau one for the time being

Nouveau is quite inferior though, and can’t be used with CUDA. So this is not really a solution but a workaround poisoned with drawbacks for many,
