Kwin-x11 4.0.5 dies when running 3D games

I updated to kwin-x11 4.0.5 today, included with the rest of the Plasma updates, and now it seems that running any kind 3D game breaks it.

I’m not sure what the actual criteria is (“game” is not a designation that should make a difference to kwin), I tried with Ship of Harkinian and Life is Strange (both native for Linux, no wine/proton), and both caused the issue. At the same time, glxgears did not.

What happens is that although the software in question runs, window borders disappear and the entire screen begins to flicker, then a popup appears saying that kwin keeps dying and asks to run a different window manager. I did not see any errors from the software that caused it to happen.

kwin-wayland is not affected.

I’m not sure what error logs I could look at, or a way to narrow down what aspect of the software causes the issue. Any ideas?

Something seems off. Do you mean kwin-x11 4:6.1.2? I do not think you should be on 4:5.0.5 if you are using Neon with Plasma 6. It would be really outdated even for plasma 5.

I’m not sure where I got “4.0.5” from when I made the thread. The actual version was 6.1.0 or 6.1.1 at the time.
The problem has been fixed with 6.1.2, in any case. Bugs 488921 – kwin_x11 crashes with sigsegv/11 when launching games and 489430 – Kwin crashes when playing steam games in fullscreen have reported it.
