I often use the Launcher find option to locate indexed files but, unlike Windows, when you are given a long list of identical filenames (say, many “info.txt”), it is not possible to know which is which because you can’t see their location. I find this a major limitation that could be easily addressed with a tooltip, or displaying path/to/file next to, or below the filename. Being able to copy the path+filename would be nice too.
Or is that already possible and I missed it? KRunner would be alternative but it gives me a small number of hits.
i get the same results in app launcher search as i do in krunner and both include the path for each hit.
krunner includes it on the right and app launcher shows it under the file name
maybe check your settings for the search plugins to make sure you have at least Locations checked… i also have Desktop Search and Places checked, in case that matters.
Ah, I see that the path is not displayed here because I use an alternative launcher layout – the third alternative, called Application Menu (right-click on Menu > Show Alternatives).
I suppose this means this omission is unintentional. Would that be classed as a bug to be reported?
If it is intentional, there could at least be tooltip when you hover over the filename. Or it could be shown with right-click. And in addition to the current ‘Open containing folder’ that shows on right-click, there could be a ‘copy location’, and ‘Properties’.
Whether files and bookmarks are shown is determined by a setting:
Application Menu Settings > General > Expand search to bookmarks, files and emails
Also, anything other than applications is displayed in separate columns. The applications column remain the main focus. So, adding the path to this alternative launcher layout too can only be a good thing for consistency and functionality.
KRunner doesn’t show the number of files and folders the launcher shows in its scrollable widnow. Insead, it shows all sorts of other information defined by the plugins. And it takes pressing two keys (I only press the Super key here for the launcher).
An additional idea might be being able to force KRunner to show only files/folders in a long list, possibly by starting the query with an ‘f’. But I will still prefer the launcher.
