Ive been spending the last few days exploring digikam and im very impressed with the software.
Id like to rename about 10,000 photos (in much much smaller batches not all at once) but i have specific requirements and wondered if someone can point me in the right direction
Background
I have used an Epson FF-680w to scan afew thousand photos. each of these photos has a duplicate which has been enhanced by the Epson software, these all end in “_a“. There are also some photos which have had the back scanned as the was writing on them, the all end in “_b“
Potentially on photo could have three files
photo.jpg
photo_a.jpg
photo_b.jpg
I have already gone through and use the facial detention functions to identify who is in each photo. Id like to capture as much information in the file name as possible including the date (if available), who is in the photo, and where it was taken.
Is there a way to do this that also takes into account the multiple versions of each photo? Ideally id like to keep the “_a“ and “_b” part of the file names and just have the rest of it changed (appart from the number assigned to each photo)
I would suggest that you start with what must be in the filename as opposed to putting in as much as possible into the filename. You could end up with unwieldy filenames.
For example, using Dolphin, it is easy activate columns to show the Date Photographed, the picture dimensions, etc. So what would be the reason to include those in the filename?
Also, consider future searching and filtering. Would the revised filenames allow you to do something that you cannot do at present?
Maybe you can post an example of the filename you want to create.
I will rephrase it as ive realized i didnt communicate it well, my apologies
What it like to include is this
date (yyyy.mm) - (people in the photo) - country of the photo - number of the photo in the album (###)
The reason im doing this is so that my family knows who is in the photo before opening it.
As for the second part, is there anyway to maintain the last two digits of photos that have either “_a” or *“_*b”. The reason id like to do this is because the epson sofware has captured enhanced versions of the photo as well as the back of the photo. Id like these to stay together but i want to change the rest of the file name
I would first suggest that you copy a couple of photos from each photo group into 3 new subfolders. For example:
TestFolder
Picture1.jpg
Picture2.jpg
TestFolder_a
Picture1_a.jpg
Picture2_a.jpg
TestFolder_b
Picture1_b.jpg
Picture2_b.jpg
I would suggest making them subfolders of the Pictures folder.
I would suggest using the Dolphin filter to filter by type a and type b photos.
Change the Digikam Album to the new Testfolder.
With the test folders set up you can easily experiment with renaming the photos until you are satisfied. Then it will be a straightforward process to rename all the photos.
Are you already familiar with the Digikam Rename (F2) or would you like me to help you further?
