Make a currated app selection?

Since KDE is known to have countless apps that serve a similar purpos, it could be usefull to make a list of apps that help :

  • The developpers to know what app is more deserving attention
  • The ditribution to deliver apps
  • End user to chose an apps to acomplish a task

I started a list of apps for both desktop and touchscreen devices because a app designed to desktop could look bad on mobile. As a first iteration, i picked apps that have a menu bar as desktop and apps crafted using Kirigami as touchscreen.

File manager for touchscreen: Whale

PDF reader for touchscreen: Okular Mobile

Never heared of Okular Mobile before, look decent.

Whale look like a bit too experimental to me

Who would do the curation? Wouldn’t this amount to internal favorite-picking that could de-motivate developers?

Ultimately what’s the problem this proposal would be solving?

I think we could have random rotation in the discovers “editors choice” thing:

  • Every week we pull random kde apps
  • We make sure every app gets spotlight once
  • When all apps have been gone through, we start from all over again

So that we never show one app two weeks straight.

Could call the editors choice something else too.

That would simplify the chousing process for new users that want something that “just work”, reflect at best the “simple by default, powerful when nedded” moto. This is mostly a mask to the KDE fragmentation.

For currating apps, the best is to let the community debate about it.

As for for your concern about developers de-motivation… well i haven’t really thinked about this issue but i see it more like a communication to users and ditros so it would not be very impactful.
