since upgrading to Kunbuntu 24.04 with Plasma 5.27.11 I’m struggling with the Microphone Mute hotkey.
KDE displays three different states of the microphone:
the first one is obvious: microphone open
the third one is: microphone mute
but the middle is is unclear to me. I don’t know what it’s trying to tell me (mic level down?) - and in fact it’s not doing anything: microphone open
using the mouse, by clicking that icon, toggles between the first and the third - properly opening and muting the microphone.
but the hotkey toggles between the first and the second: open and , leaving the microphone open at all times - but the popup that shows up says ‘muted’:
and shows the third (muted) icon.
can you a) help me understanding what that second icon tries to tell? and b) how can I make the hotkey toggle between the first and the third?
I haven’t used 5.x in a while, but it sounds like the shortcut that you use does not actually closes the microphone, instead setting its input volume to 0.
This is mostly not great because certain voice communication apps (for example, Skype) adjust the input volume automatically and may not understand that “zero volume” means “do not send audio input”.
Can you share a screenshot of your “audio volume” keyboard shortcuts section?
here’s the screenshot - I’m using the ‘Mute Microphone’ shortcut - but it’s not muting, it’s just reducing the volume, even though the system popup displays ‘Microphone Muted’.
Basically the not sure state means that your current microphone is muted, but not all recognized mics are. You can fix that by going in your settings and muting all other mics. After that the hotkey will get you the mute icon.
