Miller Columns in

Hi guys,

I am a huge fan of all-things KDE and I love Dolphin. I am missing one thing:
miller columns, which I assume would be great to have
I don’t want to be rude or ungrateful, as I absolutely love the work that people put into it.
I really liked the “finder” when a friend showed me a MACOS (the only thing I liked about it  ) and I started wondering, whether it would be possible to implement it into dolphin or whether someone already is working on it … I have tried with Python and got the traditional views (using Qt6), but I am not satisfied with the performance
It mainly supports styling, i.e. accent colors and icons, but I’d rather have a fully fledged explorer than miller columns …
So I guess my question is boiling down to “is it planned” and “would it be maintainable?”

all the best and thanks in advance,
K

Its tracked here: 387455 – Column view in Dolphin

It seems its just a lot of work and nobody had the time to do it yet.

Oh, nice!
Thanks for the help!

That seems like a lot of money/work - I’d love to chip in but as an individual I don’t have that kind of money freely available

It would need to be collective, but we don’t have a structure for this ATM.

And then a dev with no employment contract (or willing to leave its job) to work on a it for a few weeks…

I would consider it as a dolphin maintainer but I have no time for it, for instance.

It can be done in “spare-time” mode but that would take months or years.
But people like to have a life in weekends and not keep contributing everyday.

Yeah, I fully understand all of these points!
I did not intend to be pushy or ungrateful!

Everybody deserves weekends and time off - ultimately free time, family, and friends are more important than career or fulfilling other people’s wishes!

Thank you for your reply!
I am looking forward for more amazing software, coming from all the developers with KDE!

I made a POC. Anyone who is interested in this feature: please test and tell me your thoughts (and found bugs)

Probably, we should merge this thread:

To anyone still tracking this thread - there is an open merge request that looks like it has a pretty good chance of getting merged

At this point I consider it Alpha to Beta quality.
Will probably merge in soonish so we have until December (26.12) to test from main branch.

Still some issues to discover most likely, but pretty usable already, and none that I know are not fixed.

Testing feedback welcome in the merge request.
