Mouse cursor randomly disappears

Occasionally when I close a random window, or even when I close a firefox tab, my mouse cursor disappears. I can get it back by Alt-Ctrl-F12 Alt-Ctrl-F1 Alt-Ctrl-F2, which looks like a login screen but just reopens my existing session (I don’t know whether the second step is necessary).

Is this a KDE thing, or a Wayland thing, or???

My processor is an Intel I9-14900K. Might it be a hyperthreading thing?

Using Debian 12.
KDE Plasma Version 5.27.5
KDE Frameworks Version 5.103.0
QT Version 5.15.8
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Graphics Card: NVidia Quadro K2200 using nouveau driver

Hi - just based on the quick description, it might be related to the following issue reported in the KDE Bugtracking System: 479583 – in intel gpu system, default software cursor disappears on screen after kwin commit b214251f81cbacacf3ef483081a7cef15343fa7f

If so, that one was fixed upstream over a year ago in Plasma 6.0. Since Debian doesn’t distribute new versions of Plasma within the same OS release, though, that fix likely never made it to Debian 12.

For what it’s worth - in my personal experience from a couple years ago, Plasma 5 + Wayland + NVIDIA, especially with the Nouveau drivers (but even with the proprietary ones), was unfortunately a very visually glitchy and unstable experience. I’ve had almost no issues with Plasma 6 + Wayland + NVIDIA, though.

If you can’t upgrade to Plasma 6, or change your graphics card to one supported by the current NVIDIA proprietary drivers (or with built-in Linux kernel support, ex. AMD or Intel), then an X11 session might function a bit better in your particular situation?
