Move window without raising not working

I am using up-to-date Fedora 43. I posted this question over there but after not receiving any replies someone there posted that I should ask it here, too.

I use Focus-Follows-Mouse. In “System Settings->Window Management->Windows Behavior” I have “Inner Window, Title Bar and Frame Actions”→ “Meta+Left click” set to “Move”. But when I try to move a not-on-top window with meta-left it always raises. I have searched through settings for something that might be conflicting with this behavior but not found anything.

How do I get window movement without raising to work?

hi, welcome.

under settings > window behavior > window actions > inactive inner window actions

you can set it to activate but not raise

activate and activate, pass click

Thanks.

That’s how I’ve got it set now and meta-left-clicking does move windows but it also always raises windows on the down-click. And setting it to just “Activate” (which is what I prefer) does the same thing.

don’t know why i didn’t notice this before but under the lower section where you choose the meta action there is move and there is activate, raise and move

if i choose the latter i get the behavior where it will raise the window im trying to move

but if i take the first option (like you have in the screen shot) i get the behavior you want where it does not raise…. moving the window behind the other windows.

the top section does not seem to have any effect on the meta+click behavior.

if you are not getting that on your install then it likely a bug or something is borked.

does a new user behave as expected.

i’m using X11, so this may be a wayland thing if you are using that.

[Damn it. Accidentally deleted post while editing. Sorry.]

Thanks. I’ve actually tried both Wayland and X11 (X11 is a lot slower for me, so I default to Wayland, but I’m having problems with gnuplot in Octave using Wayland). But either way I’m getting the same raise-on-meta-left-downclick behavior.

I’ve tried changing, applying and then changing back all the settings in that tab but the problem doesn’t resolve so I’m not sure how to proceed (don’t know what files to look at, etc.). I guess it’s a bug or something in Fedora maybe? Disappointing because I really rely (mussel memory) on being able to move windows without raising them.

did you try a new user?

if it’s just something in your dot files, it should be possible to isolate it.

OK…

Just tried creating a new user and the results are the same. With the settings shown in my post above meta-left-click moves and raises windows.

that’s a bug… bugs.kde.org

Thanks for the link - and the all the replies. Searching at that link I see that what looks like the same issue (e.g. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=508581) has been reported and confirmed several times since last June. But nothing seems to have been done. I guess there isn’t anything I can do.
