Multimedia keys (play, rev, forward) don't work anymore

Multimedia keys (play, rev, forward) don’t work anymore.
I don’t know when exactly they stopped working.
In Shortcuts panel they are still assigned to actions in Media Controller group, and I can change them (they’re detected by system when I want to assign them).
But none of the apps react to them (firefox, chrome, spotify) and it worked before.

How to fix it ?

Kubuntu 24.04, Plasma 5.27.11

do you have the media player icon disabled in the system tray?

if you disable that, the buttons won’t work… pulled my hair out for a week trying to figure that one out.

I didn’t change anything recently
ok, I’ve added “media player” widget to my taskbar, but nothing changed,
it says “no media playing” - doesn’t “detect” Spotify, YT in Firefox.
It detects YT in Chrome, but still play/pause doesn’t work.

when i first start clementine (no music playing) the keys don’t have any affect, but if i start playing media from clementine then the widget recognizes the app and the media keys work.

start from a fresh reboot and walk thur opening the media app and using it’s controls to start playing something and see what happens.

I have the same problem. It seems like only a few people have had this problem. My media player widget is totally broken. It does not detect media from ANY media player. I have tried all of the default Kubuntu media players, Spotify, and Firefox. No media shows up, and I cannot control playback using my keyboard’s special keys.

I have tried rebinding the shortcuts to no avail.

when i had this problem with the media keys is was due to the media entry in the system tray not being set to either “always shown” or “show when relevant”

when set to anything else, the media buttons on my keyboard would not work… tho i could still make shortcuts that worked.

I had the exact issue,
for me it was due to the default firefox setting

Since Firefox 83, we added a toggle button in “about:preferences”, which is “control media via keyboard, headset or virtual interface”, it allows users to easily enable/disable this feature.

you need to enable it manually
cant post the original doc link

This setting doesn’t seem to do anything. My Firefox browser is still being controlled by the media keys despite turning off this setting. I personally would rather not use the media keys for my browser’s media, but it’s not a big deal.

For me the bigger issue is that the open media player key on my keyboard is opening the KDE settings app for some reason. I want it to open Plexamp.
