My opinion on Kde

I’ve been using Kubuntu for at least five years, and I love KDE—but there are still a few things that bother me:

  • Dynamic wallpapers: There’s no built-in theme to automatically change the wallpaper each day, like in Windows.

  • Password visibility: You can’t show the password you’re typing on the lock or login screen.

  • USB formatting: Dolphin doesn’t offer a native option to format a USB drive.

  • File conversion: No integrated tool is available for converting files (images, videos, etc.).

  • Breeze/Adwaita themes: There’s no Breeze theme compatible with Adwaita, nor native support for Adapta.

  • Accessibility: The accessibility settings aren’t as comprehensive as in GNOME or Windows.

  • Online accounts integration: Services like OneDrive, Google Drive, or Microsoft 365 aren’t as seamlessly integrated.

  • Calendar and online accounts: Online accounts don’t sync with the KDE calendar.

  • Web widgets: Widgets displaying web pages reset their custom size every time a new window is opened.

  • Virtual keyboard: The virtual keyboard only works on touchscreens, which is quite limiting.

KDE is still a powerful and customizable environment, but addressing these small details could make the daily experience even smoother!

Sounds to me you are primed to get involved and start contributing solutions to those issues you are pointing out.

KDE is a porous community with many volunteer contributors who are often stretched thin. We are aware of many of the issues you mention, although resource constraints stop us from solving them as fast as we could.

That is where you come in, get down and dirty and become a productive member of the community for the common good.

That can be easily configured by using the “Picture of the Day” wallpaper.

I have a different astronomy wallpaper each day.

Works at least for Google and NextCloud calendars (both CalDAV).

Haven’t tried any other.

or at least make a donation.

it’s a fair list, but if i had a vote my priorities would just be on

improving merkuro calendar, including desktop integration and sync issues with google

accessibility and virtual keyboard improvements for those that need them

the rest falls into nice to have, but not essential category as there are either alternatives that work fine, or it’s not something i would use or need.

Hi Nathan,

Good list, but allow me to give my 2 cents on some of them:

I don’t know which Plasma version you are on, but on 6.4 at least, you can do just that.

I much prefer right-click option you get if Partition Manager is installed. I’m not on Kubuntu, so I am not sure but this might not be installed by default.

Why does a file manager need to format disks? I prefer proper separation of concerns.

For images there are many options, KDE-native is Gwenview, for videos I am using ffmpeg directly. Again, separation of concerns.

I don’t want to get political, but this one is on libadwaita which on it’s own is not theme-able. That is because Adwaita is specifically made to program GNOME applications, not Linux applications. If you are using a libadwaita program on KDE, you factually need to have most of GNOME installed alongside.

For all the other ones: The KDE team is working on most of them right now. Especially accessibility which includes the virtual keyboard. So there is a lot to look forward to in the near future. And you’re always invited to contribute yourself if you think the pace is too slow.

Many issues are being worked on, though often the goalposts are constantly being moved forward…

I have about 500 images and set Wallpaper to a slideshow… so you can absolutely change the wallpaper every ten seconds if you so desire.

or every hour…

Is this Kubuntu specific? I can absolutely click the 'eye’con to reveal the password on my lock/login screen.

Like this???

This is true. There have been some great solutions - many here will remember the awesome plasmoid which integrated with Google Calendar… the trouble is, GOOGLE won’t allow it… they deliberately change the rules to render many applications obsolete on a regular basis; and many other ‘seamless integrations’ are kind of limited to proprietary systems.

The same is now happening with Android phones, Three of my favourite applications will cease to exist now because of the high bar of entry for their soon-to-be walled garden approach.

on the plasma 5 lock screen i can see the ‘eyball’ but on the SSDM screen (at least on the themed version i use) you cannot… and it’s probably for security reasons.
