New application and apps.kde.org

Hello community!

I’ve created an application for project cost estimation, since there was no dedicated free open source software for this. As much as I would like to write it in KDE/Plasma framework, there’s no practical way to do it directly with my set of skills, so for the moment it’s a Qt application. I’m hoping to make it more KDE (i.e. with PyKF5, or maybe with some contribution to compelte KDE app), but for the moment it’s purely PyQt5.

I wonder, whether this app would qualify for publishing on apps.kde.org? I would say yes, both since it may be fully integrated in KDE and that even with Qt it has very familiar “KDE” look & feeling.

And if so, how do I submit it to apps.kde.org? I couldn’t find any instructions or link or button.

I appreciate your insight or opinion on this :slightly_smiling_face:

The source for apps.kde.org is here: Websites / KDE.org Applications Subsite · GitLab. Most of the app pages are generated from the AppStream files in each app repository on invent.kde.org.

If you want to add your project to KDE, the documentation for that process is here: Adding a new KDE project | Developer

Thank you for the links to the resources.

However it looks to me, there’s a little misunderstanding. I have no ambitions to make the app a part of the core KDE, which - as you pointed out - has a lot of requirements, that I will never have time to study, let alone fulfill. I would be merely happy, if I will be able to replace the Qt widgets with native KDE widgets.

What I meant was to post it on KDE apps, where in past were a lot of small KDE applications or even remotely KDE-related tools. I’ve been using KDE for 26 years, so the apps-kde-org purpose and rules might have changed.

So I’m just asking about listing on KDE apps, because my app is IMHO KDE-relevant :slightly_smiling_face:.

Maybe there is a misunderstanding.

apps.kde.org lists applications developed by the KDE community.

There are a couple of requirements like being hosted on KDE’s gitlab, having one or more active KDE contributors (people with a KDE developer account), etc.

Depending on the type of application it might be beneficial to ensure consistency via use of frameworks but I doubt many applications use Plasma frameworks unless they are intended to be Plasma components.

Thank you, understood: " apps kde org lists applications developed by the KDE community.".

That probably has changed, since I downloaded miscellaneous things from there some years ago. I did noticed, there are much narrower selection of applications now and I guess it makes sense from the quality point of view.

Maybe there were changes in which domain serves which purpose at some point.

Currently the site for “downloading miscellaneous things” seems to be store.kde.org

Excellent point! :+1:

I didn’t know such site exists. It doesn’t promote itself i.e. the way MS Store promotes itself in the Start menu of Windows systems, so even though I use KDE since forever, I’ve never heard of it :grinning:.

KDE’s store is integrated in various places, e.g. Discover software manager, wallpaper settings, style and appearance settings, etc.

Or rather its content is integrated well in respective places.

Not quite sure how a content creator would become aware though, this might be something that can be improved.

I see, that has changed too :grinning: . When i insert kde-loog dot org which I used for themes and icons back in the day, it switches now to “store dot kde dot org”.

So it’s in line with what you stated. I feel I learned a lot about the changes on kde dot org.
