New Frei0r filter: SquiggleVision

Upstream is crushing it!

New PR just landed: feat: add squigglevision filter by olob0 · Pull Request #291 · dyne/frei0r · GitHub

Nothing to do XML-wise, by the looks of it

Depending on when we built 26.08, frei0r may have had squigglevision already in it. If not, it has to wait until 26.08.1 or later.

Yooooo I’ve been lookin’ for an effect like this for so long now!

Hope to see it in Kdenlive soon! I can’t tell ya the headaches I’ve been facing trying to figure out some kind of workaround, haha.

What do you mean by workaround? If you’re talking about animation, they pulled it off on DOS software, so any software can replicate it easily.

Gif is actually from Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist. Home Movies season 1 used the style as well but the team was pretty divided on it so they switched to flash in season 2.

While you’re lot wrong, the main issue is that the methods of pulling off a similar effect in Kdenlive at the moment are… less than ideal.

The best method I’ve found is having two copies of the footage I want to apply the effect on, both having an alpha strobe effect with opposite timings and then adding in a distort effect- also with equal but opposite values. This results in the “Squigglevision” effect.

Even then, the Alpha Strobe method doesn’t look all too good, since there’s no way to lower the framerate of the distortion, resulting in something that just kinda looks a little awkward when you have the intensity of the distortion effect turned up too high- meaning the effect can’t be too pronounced.

Ideally, I would have been able to simply use the “Choppy” effect, also in the mlt library, but for one reason or another, Kdenlive doesn’t support it. Could be for compatibility reasons, could be an oversight- I’m honestly not sure. Though, I’d think if there’s a time freeze option, surely Kdenlive would have the choppy effect? I’m getting a little off topic- I’m sure it’s not currently in for a reason.

So, until this or the Choppy effect gets supported by Kdenlive, I’d either have to keep using the dual alpha-strobing method, or just go over to shotcut, wherein the choppy effect is present for the footage I want to boil- neither one is quite ideal.

I hope that sorta explains what I meant by “workaround”- the current options for kdenlive to have the squigglevision effect as of 26.04 aren’t ideal.
