New user, pc crashes all the time

I switched my pc to from a nvidia gpu to a amd gpu and it went from booting up instantly to taking forever to start up and it now crashes multiple times a day. Im new to using linux so im not sure what could be causing it, last night i got a purple screen crash that said ‘fatal machine error’ and my pc hasnt been able to connect to the internet. Im not sure whats going on or how to fix it.

Usually when it crashes i get this screen

you are in emergency mode. After logging in, type 'journalctl -xb' to view logs. 'Systemctl reboot' to reboot or 'exit' to contiue boot up.

Usually trying to exit and or reboot a few times gets past it and has my pc usable. I tried checking the errors in the log but there are alot of them and this is my first time using linux and i do not have a background with computers.

I think this is caused by something to do with the graphics card. I thought id uninstalled the nvidia drivers and installed updated the amd ones. My pc wouldnt use the graphics card without me manually installing the drivers.

hello, for amd drivers, the kernel has those already

perhaps if you tell us details of the hardware in particular, version of gpu and the motherboard, cpu in use could help

Also can you post the error output after a crash. It might tell something.

do you still have these issues if you go back to using your previous GPU?

could be it’s not fully seated or has inadequate power

Where do i find it?

I no longer hve my orevious gpu so i cant check. I dont think powersupply is the issue. Ive checked on pc part picker and my psu is able to supply more than needed. The pc also doesnt crash consistently when gaming

The gpu is a rx7600xt, cpu intel i7-9700k, i think i got kde plasma LTS, sys info says i have version 5.27.12.

The motherboard is asrock h370m-hdv

this might be your issue, unfortunately

Can you explain why?

Funnily enough ever since i started looking for a fix my pc has been working perfectly and stopped crashing.

it knows

just saying older boards can develop weird intermittent problems with connectivity… contacts oxidize, traces can crack, other components can burn out.

sometimes taking everything out and just reseating it will fix things (or percussive maintenance).

I got around to re installing the os. No boot up issues but i keep getting fatal machine error crashes. Im not doing anything out of the ordinary. Can someone tell me how to find the logs pls?

i use sudo journalctl -b -1 -p3 to find the critical errors -p3 from the last boot -b -1, but those might not be much help with crashes.

what does kinfo say

what about swapon

i would first look to see if there is a bios update you might need from the maker of your motherboard.

then i would see if there is any SGX features in the bios that should be enabled.

the game appears to be silver or platinum rated so it should run, but did you install the game under linux using steam or how are you accessing this game?

there is also info about disk health that deserve a closer look, maybe worth checking your SMART info on the disk where the game is stored.

are you running any sort of AMD drivers for the GPU or just using the kernel?

So i updated the bios and i got a print out on boot “invalid enviroment” or something, i didnt press anything and it quickly disappeared and booted up.

The ufei settings (i pressed del on boot) doesnt show any scx options. Is it another menu?

Ive had to restart it a few times, i keep getting fatal machine errors before reachinging the log in screen.

The only error, now, from journal is sgx

spoke to soon on further reboots the previous errors persist

I had a look at the smart report for SDB it says

Smart sratus: good Overall Assessment Healthy

….

Uncorrectable sector count: 6 sectors

Its a 8tb hard drive with a lot of old stuff on it.

my kernel version says 64bit but the sgx error say x86, does that matter?

ALso, no I havent done anything to the amd drivers, all the updates I’ve done have been sudo apt update/upgrade. I know the terminal installed some amdlib things, cant remember exactly what.

Looking for sgx in my motherboard manual and not finding anything

i would focus on the disk error then… found this thread on the same error
