No drag and drop to or from Firefox

It seems Firefox is becoming progressively more broken after every update to Neon. I was going to provide screenshots, but after this mornings updates, now nothing happens at all. Here are the issues:

  1. Dragging a link or file FROM Firefox to the desktop results in it opening the sticky notes widget with the URL (how can I delete this bit of useless software - I do not use sticky notes and never will).
  2. Dragging a file TO a Firefox input box now does nothing at all. Yesterday, it would at least say “file:///path/to/somefile.file” though not actually upload anything. Today, nothing.

It happens in both Wayland and X11.

Yeah, this happened before. The usual suspect, firefox. See if you can drag from the padlock icon in the urlbar.

Already did… just makes a sticky note.

Hi shadow

Last time I checked, Neon is bleeding edge and that bugs and other things are to be expected and documented and reported in the bug room. As a result not many regular users will be able to help.

Good luck

Yep, it seems the Neon team is making good on their promise to take Neon beta. My previous goto was kubuntu, but the direction its taking with all the nasty snaps and being perpetually behind the rest of the world with the exception of Debian (the latest Kubuntu is still on P5), I am beginning to look at alternatives. Many people recommend SuSE, but I do not like SuSE - hard to say why - it just feels “foreign” to me. Downloading Manjaro KDE now

if the issue is related to Firefox itself, or to Plasma, well, you probably will see this happen there as well, assuming identical versions of each, as well as Qt.

But:

For me, dragging to a browser has always been hit or miss, depending on the specific website code, the web browser being used, or the phase of the moon, it seems. This is across more than one distro and both Plasma 5 and 6.

Discourse based forums seem to work just fine for this 100% of the time, on all my browsers and distros. Vbulletin based ones seem to be problematic for me everywhere. Job application/HR platforms usually don’t work in any browser for me, in terms of dragging files.

Up until recently Nate, I have never had any issues with FF. I could drag and drop everything in both directions everywhere. I dunno if I just got lucky for a while, but up until P6, Neon was flawless. Perfect. Then the sticky note thing started again a few months back (last time I saw that was back in 2019 - and yes, I am aware of the bug report you linked to), and then a couple of days ago, the “drag to” stopped working too, and then today… nothing happens at all, its like it does not even know anything occurred.

I have not checked Kubuntu 24.04 yet to see if things are still ok in P5. Given how little control Plasma gives me over basic hardware functions, like color, clocks, and cooling, I am considering moving to Gnome, which has these tools.

The issue has been reported in Suse, Manjaro, Debian…

Using Plasma? Or with all DMS?

KDE for all I know.

I would like to apologize for the bitchy tone of my last reply. That was unfair. I’m letting my frustration get the better of me. I have reminded myself that the things that we are going through at the moment are to be expected and will get resolved, and as P6 and Wayland mature, it will be as good an experience as we hope it will be. I am chanting “patience is a virtue” to myself.

Hey shadow

Do not forget there are many KDE based live distros out there. Easy to use with a usb or optical disk. Take a distro hop on the wild side.

Its hard to give up a love as strong as mine. Neon has been a dream up until recently. Best I have ever used. That being said, I have downloaded SuSE, Deb12, Manjaro, and MX. Will I move… probably not. I have to remind myself that 95% is still pretty damn good. The last 5% will come.

Any difference between .deb and flatpak versions?

Due to the “sandboxing” of snaps and flatpaks there are usually issues with anything that needs to interact outside the sandbox like extensions and so on. All you end up doing is replacing dependency issues with interoperability issues. The minute you open things up to interoperate fully, you lose any advantage the “sandboxing” feature provides. IMO, sandboxing apps on a desktop PC is pointless. It is only useful on servers or multi-user environments on public networks.

I just discovered that XnView, an image management tool, can drag and drop to and from Firefox just fine. I cannot drag and drop to/from the desktop, I cannot drag and drop to/from Dolphin, I cannot drag and drop from a dialog, but I can do all of that within XnView. So, Firefox is not broken. Plasma is.

Not sure what do you mean by this but…i migrated from macOS to tumbleweed +kde last year and never had issues. Even the migration to kde6 was smooth. And the opensuse community is great and helpful. Evertytime I have questions they are always answered.

Well the problem is the same no matter whether I use .deb or flatpak anyway.

I mean that I think I may be too entrenched in my ways. I first started with Slackware way back in the day, then discovered the joys of KDE in the form of Mandrake, and then moved to Kubuntu. Due to the experience I have had over the decades, things like Arch make sense to me, while SuSE feels incomprehensible - like a foreign language.

That being said, I have not been able to test a recent version of SuSE as they do not seem to make a live USB as far as I could glean. I have their most recent ISO on my ventoy disk but when I launched it, I only had the option to install it, and I do not want to install it just to test it.

I have the same issue. Thankfully I can drag n drop a file from dolphin to the KDE “open file” dialog that firefox displays and I’m ok with that.
