No start menu or menu bar after update to Plasma 6.1

Hello,
After updating to Plasma 6.1 and reboot, I get only a black screen with no start menu or menu bar.
Adding a background picture from settings it doesn’t apply.
Only task corner is working and then I can type in search frame to run every program installed on the system
The same behavior in Wayland and X11.

I tried manual update from the terminal using pkcon and apt but nothing changed.

Do you have any idea of how I can resolve this problem?

My system:
Operating System: KDE neon 6.0
KDE Plasma Version: 6.1.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.3.0
Qt Version: 6.7.0
Kernel Version: 6.5.0-41-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 48 × Intel® Xeon® CPU E5-2680 v3 @ 2.50GHz
Memory: 62,8 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: llvmpipe
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Lite Hash Rate
Manufacturer: HUANANZHI X99

Thank you.

this leads me to think you are only running on your iGPU and the RTX is not being used.

try this: reboot and when you get back to the grub screen, choose EDIT and remove the words “quiet splash” from the kernel parameter, then hit F10 to boot

Thank you for your advice
There is no i GPU on my system. Only the RTX.
I rolled back to Plasma 6.0 using Timeshift but I would like to update to 6.1
I am not sure I want to do a clean install and I don’t have enough free time to search-and-discover what went wrong and how to solve it.

It is too pity I have to say I will wait for the next update… :frowning:

Today I tried again to update to Plasma 6.1
This time I used uCareSystem for this https://github.com/Utappia/uCareSystem/
The procedure didn’t return error messages.
After rebooting I found again a black screen with only Firefox appearing in one of my monitors.
No graphics at all. So I made a small video capture using Spectacle to better show you what I mean: Spectacle screencapture

Any help will be appreciated.

I am guessing that due to it using LVMpipe you are using Nouveaux? Nouvaux is garbage with Nvidia. Use the proprietary driver and try switching from Wayland to X11. Nvidia cards work best in X11 with their own Nvidia driver.

You should update neon from Discover, not from the CLI or using third party softs not designed for Neon.

uCareSystem does a great job but I followed your advice and run Discover.
I got the message
Replacement Available:
“runtime/org.freedesctop.Platform/x86_64/21.08” is no longer receiving updates.
Replace it with the supported version provided by “”?

Clicking on Proceed Discover crashed. This happened every time but then I let running updates to finish and then did a reboot.

On reboot I got the message:
“Failed to start NVIDIA Persistence Daemon.
See systemctl status nvidia-persistenced.service for details”
but this time the GUI launched correctly with task bar, menus and background pictures in place.

Just in case, I rebooted and everything was OK.

Actually, that happened to me too during an update. It seemed like Discover had crashed, but the update actually proceeded correctly in the background.

I do suggest installing the proprietary driver and using X11 not Wayland with your Nvidia GPU. You will have a much more pleasant experience. You can select X11 on the SDDM login screen at the bottom left where is says “session”.

You can install the NV driver easily by installing Ubuntu Drivers.

sudo apt install ubuntu-drivers

Then install the driver

sudo unbuntu-drivers autoinstall

Alternatively you can also use the Ubuntu Drivers GUI

sudo apt install software-properties-qt

Go to the “additional Drivers” tab, select the “proprietary/tested” option and click apply, then reboot when its done. It may take a while.

Thank you for your time.

I switched to X11 and software-properties-qt was installed.
I am using currently Nvidia Server driver ver. 535
I tried to install the listed ver. 545 but it had unmet dependencies and it returned to 535.
So long it is working well and better than with Plasma 6.0.
