Good morning, from Wales UK.
I have only quite recently discovered Okular, and like it very much. I use it to display music score to play from at my keyboards. For longer pieces I use the autoscroll feature, via the keyboard (Shift and down arrow). The limitation is that this offers only a fairly crude adjustment as to speed, and I often find the slowest (one arrow press) is too slow, and the next (2 arrow presses) too fast , so that at some point either my playing has outrun the display, or the display has outrun my playing.
Is there currently any way of fine-tuning the scroll speed ?
And if not, might this be considered for future development ?
Sincerely
Ian Graham
yeah okular only has those stepped Shift+Down / Shift+Up speeds. theres no fine slider in settings last i checked. handbook just says bump with shift+arrows and hold Shift alone to pause.
for scores sitting between two steps people usually start slow, then pause with Shift when they get ahead, or use Presentation mode and flip pages. continuous speed control would be a feature request on bugs.kde.org for okular.
hi, welcome
i had no idea about this feature, thanks for pointing it out.
however i find the 10 speed increments quite granular on my instance of okular and seem like they should accommodate a wide variety of reading speeds
that said there doesn’t seem to be a setting for this feature or even any visual indication of this feature being in effect (other than the scrolling, which could be panic inducing if you triggered it by accident
)
some data to consider: the scroll speed seems dependent on the window size
i timed the scroll at level 5 (shift + five down arrows) for single page (fit page view) for different window sizes on my vertical 1920x1080 display
when okular was full screen it took 30s for a full page to scroll
when okular was half screen (meta+down) it took 20s for a full page to scroll
when okular was 1/4 screen (meta+down+left) it only took 15s for a full page to scroll
okular 23.08.5
Thank you for these quick replies.
It’s very easy with LibreOffice to create custom page sizes and then save as pdf. From what skyfishgoo says, it’s probably worth experimenting a bit with page sizes - might in effect control speed that way ?
once you fix your viewport to full screen or half screen, etc then the time to scroll a full page becomes a fixed value… so setting page contents by customizing the .pdf is certainly another way to control the scroll speed.
that’s thinking outside box
also i’ve found that scrolling the mouse wheel can roll back the scroll position without cancelling the scroll action, like using the arrow keys or page up/dn keys do.
Having played around with various edits, I think for me the autoscroll option is maybe not the best way to go.
I’ve done some ‘small page’ pdfs and opened them in Presentation ode, and it’s then possible to ‘page turn’ with a single press of the right cursor key. If you want to get tricksy, duplicating a grand stave at turnover gives more options as to the exact moment to turn. I’m using 3 grand staves to a page at the moment, which I find gives a good zoom level from my source pdfs, but the exact ‘settings’ will depend on various individual things - your eye sight and the size of your monitor inter alia.
