To reproduce:
- Go to Online Resources, search for “forest”, click on the first clip and click Import.
- Nothing happens
The search works, I can see the clip is online following the provided URL, When trying to click “Import” on a movie it doesn’t do s***.
I haven’t found a bug report, and I am not familiar with the bug tracking system. Specially the “everyone can see your email, and the slow webpage”.
Maybe anyone can create the issue, provide any help with debugging?
Thanks!
Hi, and welcome to the community.
EDIT: Strike this: This definitely needs a bug report so that the devs can look into this. Not sure whether this is a regression or an issue that has been there for a while but went unnoticed (not that many users are familiar or use this functionality).
I don’t understand what is so complicated about bugs.kde.org (you can launch that from within Kdenlive via Menu > Help > Report Bug) and the visible email (create a temporary one for that purpose). Since I can confirm the issue on Windows 11 and KDL 24.05.0, I will create the bug report “on your behalf”.
That said, I think the least thing users of this free software could do is actively participate in making it even better, and that includes filing bug reports in the one tool the dev team uses for that. In the end everyone benefits …
EDIT: In trying to file a proper bug report, I found that the Import
button works as designed as long as there is only one file available. For example, search for “forest” just in Pexabay and it works. The example you used searches the Internet Archive, and every link in the search result produces a list with several file formats for the asset to be downloaded as. So, Kdenlive cannot distinguish or decide which format to d/l. Still, following the link you can d/l the file in the format you prefer (and Kdenlive can process, unless you want to transcode it), and then add it to the project bin like any other (local) resource.
It doesn’t work as designed, or it is not designed properly.
Link to the bug report?
Did you try to just d/l an image from Pixabay?
And what is the number of the bug report (I couldn’t find it in bugs.kde.org)?
This has nothing to do with the other options like “pixabay”. This is specific to the “Internet Archive Movies” option.
I was asking you the bug report number as you said earlier that you were filing it, that it was easy and that one should always strive to at least post bug reports.
I did not create a bug report because the function is working as designed. If there is one file to download it will be downloaded and added to the project bin. If there are more than one file you have to follow the link, decide which file to download and add it to the project bin yourself.
This I explained in my edited post. I’m sorry if this was not clear enough.
If you feel inclined to report this as a bug, go ahead and create one yourself. Or you may want to create a feature request in bugs.kde.org so that Kdenlive offers all files to the user for them to decide which one they want.
Could you post the sources of your find?
Clicking the import button and silently failing is never intended behavior. An error should be noticed. There is no point in handling the case where more than one file is found, just tell the user that.
Well, as per your “instructions”:
- Search for “forest”
- Click on the first hit (“Deep Forest”)
- Follow the link
It shows this:

As you can see there are 4 links listed out of 54 files in total. If Kdenlive picked the first one it’s most likely not what 99% of the users wanted - H.264 were a better choice, but Kdenlive doesn’t know that.
And if you follow the links for each hit for your search for “forest” in the Internet Archives you’ll end up with page after page with many download options like the screenshot above.
I agree that from a UX perspective a warning or some other kind of information is better that doing nothing. But I can imagine that when this feature was developed most - if not - all web resource sites they spoke with delivered only one file per hit.
Again, feel free to log this as a bug, or file a feature request.
EDIT: Perhaps the API changed and Kdenlive hasn’t picked this up yet
Following the steps from top and click on Import
, Kdenlive sends a request. But as several possibilities exists to download, nothing happens. Maybe Kdenlive should show a pop-up window with the downloads possible (or some hint what to do).

Guessing the intentions of the original code is not a good approach, this is a bug. I don’t know why you keep asserting that I am free to log this bug.
You said that it is very easy to report a bug, you’ve even wrote a whole paragraph about “how to do it” (I’m not creating a temporary email), and you haven’t done it.
The only thing I’m asking is the bug report link if anyone is able to create it. I am not.
At least two people are aware of this bug. I know bug reporting is not magic, and I think this thread is done.
