There is an option to hide all images and videos initially, but that’s a bit annoying, since it requires clicking on every single image anyone sends. (Also, it’s confusingly in the “Security & safety” category.) Having a separate setting to show GIFs as a static image until hovered or clicked would be much better for accessibility and just for being less distracting.
