Priority: Ultra mega major
Problem: my cursor no longer go spinny.
Okay, but a little seriously. I think I noticed a regression in Plasma 6.1. I have always used an animated cursor on my computer and Linux is no different. But recently, my cursor animation became glitchy and often just stops working, while the cursor is stationary. I’ve already made a bug report (bugs[dot]kde[dot]org/show_bug.cgi?id=490440), but to just make it a little easier to discuss and brainstorm I also wanted to make a topic here. In that bug report is also a video showing what happens, as well as a link to the exact cursor I use (although it happens with every animated cursor as well, not just this one).
Since 6.1 something called “explicit sync” was introduced into Plasma. From what I read about it, that sounds like it could be the issue. If the cursor doesn’t tell the compositor to render a new frame when the animation plays, then the animation just stays the same. It would also explain why the cursor does update when something in the background does move (like a video), since that would be rerendering that portion of the screen (including the cursor).
The only thing is, I am not using an Nvidia device. This happens on my ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 laptop with an Intel i7-1370P CPU with what System Settings reports to be “Mesa Intel Graphics”. I did read that this explicit sync thing also effects users other than Nvidia though, and that it was already implemented in Mesa. So maybe that’s the problem here?
I am curious to hear what you guys think about it. Surely this can be fixed again right?
