[Plasma 6.5.1] High CPU usage

After upgrading, it seems plasmashell and kwin_wayland processes are using more CPU and my fan is always loud, I don’t use any extra widget or theme.

Operating System: Manjaro Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.5.1
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.19.0
Qt Version: 6.10.0
Kernel Version: 6.17.5-1-MANJARO (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland

Similar situation here

Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.5.1
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.19.0
Qt Version: 6.10.0
Kernel Version: 6.17.6-arch1-1 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 12 × AMD Ryzen 5 5500U with Radeon Graphics
Memory: 16 GiB of RAM (14.9 GiB usable)
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon Graphics
Manufacturer: HP
Product Name: HP Pavilion Laptop 15-eh1xxx

After upgrading, it seems plasmashell process is using more CPU and my fan is always loud, even after disabling extra widget or theme.

Hi, I had a similar issue, but with even higher cpu usage, check if your wallpaper is set to slideshow, if it is change it to image it should drop the cpu usage as soon as you hit apply.

You can also run this after the change, or reboot for good measure.

kquitapp5 plasmashell && kstart5 plasmashell

Here’s the bug report of the issue:

Operating System: Fedora Linux 42
KDE Plasma Version: 6.5.1
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.19.0
Qt Version: 6.9.3
Kernel Version: 6.17.5-200.fc42.x86_64 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland

Consumo_plasmashell

Thanks, this fix worked and was able to set the wallpaper back to slideshow

tbh it wasn’t a fix, in my case the cpu usage comes back as soon as I set it back to slideshow, my only workaround was to kept it as image.

But hey, I’m glad it worked for you.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Even with a new user and without using any slideshow, there is something that heats plasmashell and kwin_wayland processes without any intensive computing, the difference is clearly visible compared to 6.4, I can’t point to the cause but I’m doubting that new blur, so I will wait for 6.5.2 to land and see if things calm down.
