[Plasma 6] Desktop icons rearranging/reset themselves after sleep or reboot

I have this problem since last week. Every time I restart the desktop icons all end up on the 2nd monitor in a random order. I drag them back and arrange them in the order I want on the primary monitor, but it always reverts back after restarting.

This starting happening in the last week, I dunno what changed. I tried suggestions in this thread but it makes no difference. Is there some setting that might have been reverted somewhere?

Should I tick “lock in place”? I don’t think these settings are doing anything consider it reverts to alphabetic despite manual being chosen.

What is your distribution / kde plasma version? I started to have this issue a couple of weeks ago, when I upgraded from Fedora 42 to 43.

I have this problem now too.
What helped me (for the moment at least) is changing my secondary monitor from the “Folder” Layout to “Desktop”, the main monitor stays as “Folder”. This, at least for now, seems to fix this for me.
Maybe someone else can confirm that it works for them too ?

I’m using Endeavour OS (Arch), with KDE Plasma 6.5.3. I really think that something that updated this week made this happen, it started happening around Tuesday I think.

This started happening on CachyOS too after the bug was fix where you couldn’t put icons at all on the secondary screen.

Now, instead all icons reset to the being on the secondary screen (and out of order) after a logout/restart, even if I’ve moved them to the first screen.

Lock in place doesn’t seem to help.

I tried moving logging out and move .config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc so a new one would be created. I then logged back in, all settings were reset but all icons was still on the secondary screen… :frowning:

Same here, recent update on Arch Linux broke desktop icons. Clearing the [screenMapping] entry in the .config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc file fixed it for one reboot, then desktop icons were locked in once the file was recreated.

Fedora 43, setting second wallpaper layout to “Desktop” instead “Folder” seems to work for now

Cachyos user here,
Had the same bug after a -Syu (which did require chrooting and reverting the Kernel because it didn’t update the boot partition, but I think that’s unrelated due to the other reports here). Everything seems to work fine again, except for exactly this issue.
KDE is 6.5.3, Frameworks 6.20.0, Kernel 6.17.7-3.
I am gonna try sasa’s fix, but I am still leaving this comment here to bump this issue.

See the last comment in the bug report there is a MR linked which may resolve the issue.

Same problem on NixOS after update. I changed “Folder” Layout to “Desktop” as @Ilampec said and it fixed.

Plasma 6.5.3

This works, switching the Layout to Desktop and then back to the Folder again, after which the desktop icons will not be rearranged after leaving the session
