I tried using KDE Plasma 6.1, on NixOS unstable, and it was really laggy, and my system is not that bad, GTX 1650, 24 gigs of RAM and FX 8350, when I’m moving anything, everything starts to stutter really bad, and framerate drops to around 40 fps, and that was on a default plasma config
On my WM that I’m currently using, Hyprland, everything is very smooth, and I’m using latest beta nvidia drivers, so I think it’s plasma issue, is there any fix to this? I can attach a video of that later.
This sounds like a NixOS problem, not the opposite. How about you use a distro that at least respects the FHS and doesn’t do weird stuff just for the sake of being weird? Not to say about its deteriorating state with the constant fights in management and whatnot.
I just really like reproducibility and generations feature of NixOS, I just have not found any other distro with these features
But I guess I can try dualbooting Arch and test it there
But still, there shouldn’t be any performance issues just because of packaing, that’s just strange
MX Linux has a Snapshot Tool with which you can create custom .isos ready to be used for multiple installations if I’m not mistaken
Snapshots are too much space hungry and are not really easy to manage, and I only use rolling release distros, no debian or anything similar/based on it
And still, I mostly need the reproducibility, I can do that in theory on Arch, but that will be a lot of hassle
And having few system configs that I can change really easily… That will be a lot harder on Arch or any other distro
Yes but to begin with,
The unstable channel, nixos -unstable . This corresponds to NixOS’s main development branch, and may thus see radical changes between channel updates. It’s not recommended for production systems.
Nobody knows how proficient you really are in NixOS, for example what the state of your OS is regarding having installed correctly the right modules, mesa drivers, etc… the NixOS forums sound a more appropriate place to ask in my opinion if you want to be that adventurous.
But still, it’s okay if there was some bugs, or occasional stutters, but this performance issue is not occasional, and I don’t think mesa drivers really matter, because I’m on nvidia
And I already posted about this on unofficial NixOS discord server, later I will post about it on NixOS discourse
I’m gonna try plasma 5
There is no such issue on plasma 5, everything is smooth, both on x11 and wayland
Also when I start recording it stops lagging for some reason lol
But also firefox just constantly crashes on wayland plasma 6
I had that too on one machine, I went back to X11 (nixos unstable, nvidia, plasma6, x11, two high-dpi screens).
On another machine (nixos unstable, nvidia, plasma6, wayland, one high-dpi screen and a smaller one) I didn’t have the issue.
That’s my nixcfg: GitHub - pbek/nixcfg: NixOS config
Hi @Sanic! I’m using NixOS Unstable + KDE Plasma as my daily desktop/laptop workhorse on several machines for more than 1 year already and I never experienced such lagginess issues. First with X11 on Plasma 5 and then with Wayland on Plasma 6. Currently on Plasma 6.1.4, the recent Plasma 6.1.5 release should land on NixOS in the next few days.
Doesn’t seem related to NixOS itself, possibly related to your specific hardware (nvidia maybe?) or some missing configuration. To me NixOS Unstable is really much more reliable and stable than Debian Unstable - which I used previously for many years - while being much more bleeding edge and with excellent package availability.
I dropped that idea of using Plasma since then, also because of QML, it still doesn’t support full transparency after 5 or more years
Also I bought an AMD GPU since then
yeah i dont have any lag with worse hardware, like i have nvidia 940mx
