Plasma 6 on Linux Mint Wilma

Hello,
I’ve asked many Youtubers in comments same question, nobody responded.
Please can someone just tell me how and when can i upgrade to plasma 6 on Linux Mint Wilma 22 version?

Hi - one caveat right off the bat, Linux Mint does not officially provide a KDE Plasma edition at all, so getting Plasma up and running on a Mint installation is inherently more of a workaround challenge than when using a distribution that does provide an edition/spin for Plasma.

Since Mint is largely based on Ubuntu repositories, you could conceptually install KDE Plasma from those - but Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu’s “Long Term Support” releases only, which freeze the included software versions and only apply security+occasional bugfix patches on top. The Ubuntu repositories contained Plasma 5.27 when the packages were frozen for Ubuntu 24.04, so that’s all that will be contained in the repositories for Linux Mint 22.

Basically, the Debian/Ubuntu LTS/Linux Mint philosophy is to intentionally not keep up with upstream development as it occurs, but to take snapshots of that development, spend a lot of time packaging them together into a release, and then support those specific versions for a long time. If you’re looking to use more up-to-date core system software, then a Debian/Ubuntu/Mint distribution might not be the best one for you, and you might want to consider Linux distributions whose philosophy is to package recent versions of software from the upstream projects.

(Having said all of that…if you are determined and not worried about building from source, there would be ways to build Plasma 6 on your local device: Building KDE software | Developer)

Hope this helps,

Thanks for clarifying, i already have plasma 5 installed, works well, is there a way still for an upgrade, or if it doesn’t how long i have to wait? I don’t want to change distribution since im new to this neighborhood, i just switched from windows

You can’t upgrade. You’ll have to wait for the next lts. It’s explained in the previous post.

Glad your current system is working well for you! In the Linux Mint model, the next chance for an update to KDE Plasma would be the next major release of that distribution following the release of Ubuntu 26.04 in April 2026 - so for Mint, probably summer of 2026.

I’d say that, having Linux Mint installed and wanting Plasma, I would backup and install Kubuntu (similar stable positioning).

In actual fact, I bit the bullet and went rolling with Manjaro Cinnamon, and then wiped that with Manjaro Plasma a month later… and ended up with a more reliable desktop.

So go for Kubuntu if you want the same Debian system.

Thanks for info, im new to this so im sticking with safe and known options, i already had dificulty instaling my 3d modeling programs since im used to windows ways, so i dont think ill change distros, i guess ill have to wait.

If you end up being curious later, one way you can try out different Linux distributions with less hassle is using virtual machines - GNOME Boxes is a particularly easy way to do that. It’s not a perfect simulation of how it’ll work on your actual hardware, but it can give you a flavor of how to use different desktop environments, software package managers, etc. without having to worry about partitioning your actual hard disk or anything like that!
