Plasma crash after installing ChatAI

Hello,
yesterday I installed the following plasmoid:

After installing it and adding the plasmoid to the tray bar, Plasma/Kwin started crashing constantly.

At every reboot I get

  1. Normal boot until password entry
  2. Total black screen for 3-4 seconds
  3. The Desktop reappears for few seconds
  4. Total black screen
  5. The Desktop reappears for few seconds
  6. Total black screen
  7. The Desktop reappears for few seconds
  8. Total black screen forever

So it seems that Plasma/Kwin tries to restart 3 times then it dies forever.
I fixed the problem opening a terminal window (CTRL+F3) and deleting the plasmoid folder

rm -rf ~/.local/share/plasma/plasmoids/ChatAI-Plasmoid/

I created this thread not because I need that plasmoid, but for:

  • report that plasma/kwin should not crash as described above and the system became totally unusable. I can see only the mouse cursor.
  • ask if someone wants to try and let me know if he can reprocuce the issue

Operating System: Ubuntu 24.10
KDE Plasma Version: 6.1.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.5.0
Qt Version: 6.6.2
Kernel Version: 6.8.0-31-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: both X11 and wayland

I can say from a quick test if used in its stock config. It works on arch with kde 6.1.5 in wayland.

Thank you very much for your test. So it seems a Kubuntu bug or something related to my system… I’ll try to install that plasmoid again and save the journalctl if this happens again.

Is there any other useful logs besides journalctl?

I use Tuxedo OS a cousin of ubuntu 24.04 and I have exactly the same experience, it started when I upgraded from 22.0? to 24.04

Hi - the KDE Store page for that particular widget seems to indicate many folks are having significant crashing issues with it installed on more recent versions of Plasma.

Based on the comments on that widget’s GitHub Issues page - plasma crash when trying to add the applet to desktop after kdenon upgrade · Issue #22 · DenysMb/ChatAI-Plasmoid · GitHub - it might be worth checking to see if a standard Web Browser widget works OK for you.

Hi Thanks for the suggestion, the standard web browser also crashes Plasma, but not quite in the same way, on adding the web browser widget, plasma crashes and then recovers itself, but on chatai, plasma tries to rcover 3 times and crashes out requiring a back-up of ./.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc and a plasma restart to recover it - but perhaps I’ll google the web browser widget problem to see if a fix to that will fix chatai as well.

It seems the issue with all webbrowser based plasmoids. Even with the stock webbrowser plasmoid that comes with KDE Plasma.
For me it also started after the upgrade to 24.04 on KDE Neon (or maybe the update to Plasma 6.2, I’m not sure).
BTW the issue doesn’t exist on Fedora.

Ah, then it looks like it’s probably this bug manifesting with those widgets: 495758 – adding webbrowser applet to plasma workspace makes a desktop crash

If you have an up-to-date Plasma installation and notice unique messages or related symptoms on your device that aren’t already covered in that bug report’s comments, adding them there could be helpful for folks diagnosing and eventually fixing the issue
