I have been using KDE Plasma Desktop for a very long time, almost from the moment I started using Linux. But absolutely always and on any distribution I had one or two DEs installed - either Plasma + Gnome, or only Gnome. Unfortunately, for me Plasma cannot completely replace the good old Gnome, although it seems to me that Plasma is better in everything. And the reason is in the keyboard: I speak several languages, including those that require an input method editor. Gnome has native integration with IBus, so I do not see any problems with input on Gnome, except for the unusual hotkey Meta + Space. Plasma has no integration with either IBus or Fcitx5, and both work veeeeeery poorly in Plasma (I know that this is primarily a problem for the developers of these IMEs)! Often the IME either does not work, or works only in some applications, even more often the usual change of XKB layouts conflicts with the IME (when there are two language indicators on the panel and both work). Okay, I’m European and for most Europeans and Americans this is irrelevant, but the population of Asia is quite large and I don’t understand why KDE hasn’t made the input as convenient as Gnome after so many years. Until then, I have to use my beloved KDE and switch to Gnome every time I need to write something in Chinese or Japanese. It’s very annoying. Maybe some of the developers thought about making integration with IBus (sorry, I don’t even want to mention fcitx) or even creating KDE own IME?
It’s currently on this goal https://phabricator.kde.org/T17433
fcitx5 actually works very well for me on wayland (at least for chinese and japanese romaji), what is the issue you are having? It’s well integrated with the system tray icon to change keyboards, or Ctrl+Space shortcut.
Half of the applications either do not accept fcitx at all (like Steam and Valve games), or work in a strange way. For example, sometimes in browsers it stops switching layouts, even if the cursor is in the input field. And the very idea that I cannot change layouts whenever I want, but only when the cursor is active, I do not like, because in rare cases, hot keys may not work outside the English layout.
P.S. I’ve tried various fixes for fcitx and installed it exactly as instructed several times, so I’m probably just running into unexpected things.
Sounds really cool! I’ll keep an eye out for updates.
