plasma won't start on boot

Hi all,

I’ve been using KDE Neon for a while now, and while I generally quite like the feel of it, there are a few strange and exhausting issues, one of which led me to make this post.

A couple of weeks ago, there was a bigger update which apparently led to some serious problems. After rebooting, my pc only booted to the CLI, and I have to start plasma manually by logging in and running “startplasma-wayland”. This will then bring up the GUI, which at least works. However, as a side effect, nearly half of my apps were completely gone with no trace as to why and what happened.

The missing apps is the smaller problem, I’ve reinstalled them more or less easily. But the booting to CLI and having to start Plasma manually bugs me. Can someone tell me in rough terms how the boot process looks there, so I know where to look for potential errors? Or does someone have any idea what could have caused this and how to fix it?

Thanks in advance for any help!

(I’m on KDE Neon User Edition 24.04, with kernel 6.14.0-28-generic)

Maybe sddm got removed or disabled? Try sudo apt install sddm and sudo systemctl enable sddm.service to reinstall and enable it.

Thanks for the tip! But unfortunately, no, SDDM was correctly installed and working.
