Plasma's support for tiled wallpapers

For version 6.6, Plasma’s wallpaper tiling feature was moved to an add-on for being hard to implement without saving memory.

This move, however, has weakened Plasma’s support for tiled wallpapers. Notably:

  • “Tiled” options no longer appear in “Positioning”. Moreover, the wallpaper settings don’t point out the loss of these options or how to restore them.
  • Right-clicking an image in Dolphin, then selecting Set as Wallpaper > Desktop, no longer tiles the image as the wallpaper, even if a “Tiled” positioning option was previously set in Plasma or “Tiled” is currently set as the wallpaper type.

Thus I make these suggestions:

  • In the wallpaper settings, mention somehow that the wallpaper tiling feature can be restored by installing the kdeplasma-addons package, then selecting “Tiled” as the wallpaper type. (And in this sense, the tiling plugin doesn’t yet support horizontal tiling or vertical tiling). Or at least do this for users who previously used the “Tiled” positioning option.
  • Dolphin should be modified to detect the “Tiled” wallpaper plugin so that it can again tile images that it sets as wallpaper.
  • Optionally, support a feature to generate a pre-tiled wallpaper from the wallpaper settings. (This can also be done with SVG.)
