Please Improve the Chroma Key Effect and Make It Perfect

Hi, I am using the latest version of Kdenlive on Windows 10. I used to use Filmora 9 before. Kdenlive is working better for me although there are some things I have to do manually which costs time but it’s fine. I love Kdenlive. But there is a problem with Kdenlive, its Chroma Key is not working perfectly.

As you can see the Filmora Chroma Key is perfect. There is no sign of Green and I haven’t done anything. I just picked the color. At the same time, Kdenlive Chroma is not perfect. Even tho this background is very simple and easy to detect but still, there is a lot of background left. I know some of you will tell me to play with RGB to make the background disappear. But that is not the solution and it is still need to be fixed. Also, I did play with RGB to remove all the green but didn’t work. Still, there was green left.

I hope the developer team will fix it soon.

I wanted to add the screenshot from Filmora too but the forum system didn’t let me. Also, I tried to embed the image from imgbb but the system said I couldn’t add the link to my post.

Here is the screenshot of Filmora’s Chroma Key. You can see its Chroma is working much more better.

Hello @tasinone
if you could upload the picture with the green background, it would be quite easy for us to try out Chroma Key Effect. And a screenshot of the other image would be best.
Then we can quickly see if it works with Kdenlive, which I very much suspect.

I would think that Kdenlive and Filmora use different algorithms for chroma keying, so one cannot expect that this effect works the same in different editors.

Secondly, all effects provided in Kdenlive are either avfilter or frei0r effects, and the Kdenlive dev team just includes them. MLT is the framework that applies all effects and compositions, BTW.

If Chroma Key doesn’t completely remove the selected color, your source material may have some subtle shades of that color. In particular on edges this is mostly visible. Try playing with the sliders below the color selector, and the Edge Mode.
If that doesn’t get the desired results, add a Key Spill Mop Up, Despill, or Spillsuppress effects (in that order of testing).

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the Kdenlive manual has a good section for the Chroma Key effect.

Why do you need a green-screen and chroma key? Can you not do the animation once with an alpha background and than just import that animation?
I mean: subscribe, the play-button and the mouse-hand as separate graphic, placed on an alpha background.

Here is the picture but It happens with any image or video. I don’t know if I am the only one who is having this issue.

Well that’s the thing. Why should we go through so much trouble to achieve a simple things. That is why I created the topic so that dev team can try to improve this.

I don’t know how to do that. But I will try this out. Also it doesn’t fix the problem. What if I need to do this with another green screen video!

I meant the other way around. The clip “subscribe.mp4”. Create this animation with an alpha background (instead of an green background). Save it as “subscribe.mov” as a “mov” files can contain alpha.

Well, I’m afraid this won’t work for two reasons: The Kdenlive dev team doesn’t use this forum for bug reports, feature requests or other complaints - you need to log it in bugs.kde.org. And secondly, because as I said before, the effects and filters are maintained by the teams for avfilter and frei0r - so, in order for “that dev team to try to improve this” you need to approach one of them or the team behind MLT.

In the meantime, you can try to improve the green screening with additional settings and effects, use simple images of the buttons with a transparent background as @Eugen_Mohr suggested, or use Filmora or another video editor.

Hello Tasin,
Can you also upload this picture?
grafik
Then I can try out how well it works with Kdenlive.

That’s not an image. It’s a video. Here is the download link: https://uploadnow+.io/f/sPLV5LH

please remove + from the link then search.

Hello @tasinone
Thanks for the link.
It’s not that bad with Chroma Key: Advanced (color Selection) the results are quite usable with the right settings - very little of the green remains.
Perhaps this quality is enough for you.
In any case, I would be very happy if you would delve deeper into Kdenlive as a dedicated user. I think it’s really worthwhile.
