Debian 13 KDE 6 HP desktop PC. Powerdevil has a hold preventing monitor sleep.
PowerDevil 1000 bryan 1492 org_kde_powerde handle-power-key:handle-suspend-key:handle-hibernate-key:handle-lid-switch KDE handles power events block
I have edited login.conf to disable all laptop settings, among many other things. The above hold prevents the monitor from sleeping after 45 minutes. Any help would be appreciated.
Debian 13 uses KDE Plasma 6.3, and it won’t get any update until you update to a newer Debian version.
Debian generally ships outdated, unmaintained software from KDE unfortunately often, doesn’t ship even our maintenance releases IIRC.
I don’t want to blame Debian or anything, but this leaves a gap between KDE community and Debian users.
Debian recommends reporting directly to them instead.
Is this reproducible on a current/recent Plasma version ?
(You can try a live cd)
This is reproducible as it happens every time the monitor tries to sleep. Here are the details of what I’m running:
Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux 13
KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.6
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.13.0
Qt Version: 6.8.2
Kernel Version: 6.12.86+deb13-amd64 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 4 × AMD A8-5500 APU with Radeon™ HD Graphics
Memory: 32 GiB of RAM (31.2 GiB usable)
Graphics Processor: NV106
Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
Product Name: p6-2427c
(This box is far from new but pretty reliable. Linux only as well.)
I’m surprised to learn that Debian doesn’t keep up with the latest KDE fixes and updates. I’ll have to see of I can add KDE to the debian.sources to make sure KDE stays up to date. I’ll also have to be sure that wouldn’t break things in case Debian tailors KDE to work with Debian.
Also, I did go to the Debian IRC room and they told me this is a KDE issue.
At any rate, I’m not switching from KDE to anything else. I’ve always liked KDE because of the limitless customization and I honestly don’t care for any other desktop managers.
Thank you so much for your reply and for all the work the KDE team does.
Updating KDE over what is shipped with Debian 13 is a bad idea and won’t work.
For some reason, the native Power app distributed by KDE is not included with Debian 13. Instead there is an app (Power and Battery – see it in Discover if your search Power) which wasn’t written by KDE or Debian. Removing the app leaves no power settings in system settings.
There are numerous extremely bad reviews from people like me who have issues with it, and I have no idea why a laptop app would be installed on a desktop. I have found no other power options app anywhere.
You have been using KDE Plasma.
KDE is the name of community nowadays (since 2008 actually) that makes among other things a DE called Plasma.
It bothers me that people are still referring to it that way.
It is a bit like calling “Microsoft” for “Windows”, or “Mozilla” for “firefox”, but contrary to those KDE name came first.
To be clear, I meant changing distro. Whatever Debian ships as KDE Plasma is never updated, so any bugs discovered there won’t be ever be fixed until the next major update, and might already be fixed upstream.
Plasma 6.3 dates from February 2025.
Your issue might have a workaround, since this is an integration issue between two systems.
How can they know ? KDE Plasma 6.3 is unmaintained software. Did they test upstream ?
thanks for confirming what i’ve been telling ppl about using plasma with strait debian.
if you want a debian based system with a stable LTS release model then kubuntu is a far better choice than strait debian… they at least put some effort into integrating plasma well with the rest of the OS.
the next best choice for a stable release model is opensuse leap, but they are not debian based.
then there is tuxedo… it’s debian based but “rolling” like neon… not quite sure what to make of it.
Checking card: NVIDIA Corporation GK208B [GeForce GT 710] (rev a1)
Your card is only supported by the Tesla 470 drivers series, which is only available up to bookworm.
Kernel driver in use: nouveau
Kernel modules: nouveau
This is an odd decision considering that graphics card is more than adequate for what it’s used for. Other than the power (Monitor sleep) issue. The GT 710 runs Plasma 6 over Wayland with no issues. Debian currently uses the nouveau driver which I’m not familiar with.
I don’t know why Debian Blames KDE. FWIW, I suspected this to be a Debian issue all along. I don’t expect there will any upcoming fixes for the monitor sleep issue and it’s discouraging Debian is so far behind (and always will be) the current Plasma 6 release.
Thank you so much for being part of the KDE team and for you replies.
I was really surprised to see how far behind Debian is with regards to Plasma 6 and there won’t be any updates (not even in minor release updates) until the next release with Debian 14.
I’ll take a look at your suggestions. It appears Kubuntu doesn’t support the Geforce GT 710 either though…
according to the nvidia website the latest driver for that card is 470.256.02 from 2024
i’m sure there is a manual process for installing this driver on kubuntu or any linux distro, but it probably will not be as easy as the point and click GUI for current drivers.
Actually, I took your advice and TRIED Kubuntu live. There were no issues so I installed Kubuntu. Problems with screen not sleeping and volume levels not being saved are resolved.
Manual partitioning allowed me to keep all of my existing partitions and format all of them except for /home so I could keep all my files.
If anybody does this (going from Debian 13 or whatever distro to Kubuntu 26.16 LTS) I would recommend moving all Debian 13 (or whatever distro)/Plasma 6 files to a folder called Home-Save (or something) so as not to cause issues when booting Kubuntu. Kubuntu/Plasma 6 will add any necessary config files to your home directory.
I spent way too many hours trying to fix these issues, and it’s my opinion Debian 13/ Plasma 6 issues I had can’t be fixed. If it were possible, I would have fixed them. I was with Debian for many (many) years, but sometimes change is best. Debian is Gnome-centric and I’m not. Only KDE DE for me.
So now:
Operating System: Kubuntu 26.04 LTS
KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.24.0
Qt Version: 6.10.2
Kernel Version: 7.0.0-15-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 4 × AMD A8-5500 APU with Radeon™ HD Graphics
Memory: 32 GiB of RAM (31.2 GiB usable)
Graphics Processor: NVK GK208B
Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
Product Name: p6-2427c
I’d like to correct some inaccuracies in my previous post. As I know it my solution will only work when Installing Kubuntu 26.04 over Debian 13. When installing Kubuntu it’s important to use the same username. Both Kubuntu and Debian use uid-1000. If there is a UID mismatch that can be changed later but that topic probably doesn’t belong here.
At any rate, I hope my solution will help others experiencing the same issue.
