Preview Rendering with alpha channel

Forum says “New users are limited to 3 replies per topic” so I’m branching off another topic here. I would link to it, but “An error occurred: Sorry, you can’t include links in your posts.”

First: I f’ed up somewhere. I re-tested. The rendered videos do have alpha. Sorry.

I still can’t figure out how to preview-render something with alpha channel though. Use case: I have a sequence with several overlapping videos and effects. Too slow to playback and edit. So I want to preview-render this, and then embed the sequence in another sequence, overlaying the tracks below. But preview rendering with alpha doesn’t seem to be possible.

Has anybody managed to do this? 25.12.2, Flatpak

I’m not sure this can be done. If you want to preview render that section, you need to embed the sequence in another sequence and then render that preview.

I can embed the sequence in another sequence simply by drag & drop. That part works fine. And it is using the prerender. The problem is that embedding a sequence A in sequence B seems to ignore the alpha channel in sequence A, if that makes sense. Actually I checked again, and this happens even if I turn off preview rendering.

So… Embedding another sequence with alpha is what I want. Is there maybe a setting I missed? A workaround?

Cf. this thread: Object mask and time remapping in the same clip

(and for the benefit of Future People, this is the original thread that the OP here resurrected then splintered from: Rendering video with Alpha renders transparent content as black 23.04.0)

Thanks – another user in that thread seems to have tried what I’m trying to do unsuccessfully. Are you saying it’s not possible / a bug in kdenlive?
