Opening files etc requires enabling the quick filter via ctrl+i every time. Is it possible to have it on permanently?
you can set the filter bar to show in new widows of dolpin in the setting under the startup tab.
when i go to kate and choose file open, the dialog always has the filter bar at the bottom with “All Files” as the default… same for libre office
what file open dialog is not giving the filter bar?
oh, i don’t have that option in the file open dialog , just the others.
are you saying if you check the box it doesn’t stay checked the next time you use the file open dialog?

if your changes are not being saved then, please file a bug report at bugs.kde.org
This would be considered as a feature request. I can submit it for you if you would like, or you can do it yourself over at https://bugs.kde.org.
For now, if you already have Dolphin open, a quick way to “filter” is to drag the file from Dolphin to the Open/Save dialog. This will cause the dialog to select the file in whatever directory it is located in.
Oh wow, that’s a great and at the same time very confusing feature. I’d never have figured that out, because you’re only allowed to drag right onto other files or folders inside the file view and as a user I’d very much expect a copy or move action to start this way. Sorry for hijacking this thread, but I think this drag and drop action should be telegraphed much better, like with an overlay over the whole dialog as soon as you drag a file into it.
I’d rather it not, as I am used to it. I don’t remember how I found out about it, whether it was by accident, reading about it somewhere, or watching a video, but I’m glad it’s a feature and that it works the way it does.
If anything, maybe make it configurable by the user.
I think Dolphin (and KDE in its entirety) needs to keep all the settings it has, and maybe hide the more nuanced ones behind an “Advanced Settings” checkbox, like VLC does. Don’t remove settings just because new users get decision fatigue, when long-time core users love having all the options that are already there and/or are being added.
In fact, if this isn’t already a feature request, I’m gonna submit one. Configurability and user freedom are some of the things that set Dolphin and KDE apart. I would prefer the settings I like to be hidden behind a click for advanced users rather than be removed entirely.
I don’t see how my suggestion removes any features? At the moment it does not matter in the slightest on which file or folder you drag the file onto, the result is always the same. Expanding the area on which the user is able to drag would only make it simpler to use and the feature easier to discover in my opinion.
You’re right. You only asked that it be tweaked - made more discoverable so that more users can use it if they’d like.
that’s not a “filter” tho… that’s just a cd action to change directories… neat as it is.

OP is indicating that while the open dialog has a configuration setting for showing the filter (ctrl+I), the setting is not being retained and recalled for the next time the dialog is used.
that setting should be saved and recalled along with show hidden and show preview, etc
since the Ctrl+I option is a new addition in plasma 6 and did not exist in plasma 5 there is every reason to believe that its implementation is bugged and somehow this new key value pair are not being written to the config file, or not being read by the open dialog.
I wasn’t saying it was a “filter”. I was saying that it is a workaround that would achieve a similar result in that the file would immediately show up when you drag it from Dolphin.
I’m not sure if you know that when some types “word”, it usually means it’s fake, the opposite of something, or not exactly true. We do this even in verbal conversation where we either stress a word or use “air quotes”.
I fully understand what the OP is requesting, and like you said, it’s a new feature, so maybe saving the setting wasn’t thought of. As such, it may or may not be a bug.

Yes, REPORTED is just the default status. It means nothing until a developer changes it to another status. And the added info is from me - I’m not the OP nor the reporter.

it was still in NEEDS INFO when changed it.
Didn’t think that was something a non-developer should change, so that’s why.
