Random Log Outs in X11

Operating System: Manjaro Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.2.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.10.0
Qt Version: 6.8.1
Kernel Version: 6.12.11-1-MANJARO (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Processors: 8 × Intel® Core™ i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz
Memory: 31.3 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970/PCIe/SSE2
Manufacturer: ASUS
Product Name: All Series

I have 3 screens and two of the GPUs in SLI

For a while now, I’ve been experiencing random log outs. Recently, its been getting more often. I’ll be using the computer for a number of hours or days without logging out, then I go to open an application or window and the whole thing just logs me out back to the login screen. I’m happy to give error reports, but I don’t know what to look for.

Thanks

Jason

Hi - it sounds like something pretty fundamental to your session is crashing and kicking you back out to the login screen. The best bet for diagnosing might be to look in your system journal - if you know what time it occurred, then you can look in the journal around that time using the journalctl command.

For example, if a random logout happened at 2:05 PM today, you could use sudo journalctl --since="2025-02-07 14:04:00" --until="2025-02-07 14:06:00" to look at the surrounding couple of minutes and see if any major errors or crashes are being reported there - feel free to post those here and folks can mention anything that might stand out from past experience

Thanks for the tip

It just happened again. I misstyped my password getting logged in, that’s why it shows an authentication failure, but soon after that I went to open something and it logged out. Here’s the output during that time

Other folks here may have clearer ideas on this one, as I’m no expert at reading crash logs and backtraces…but, these are the things that come to mind for me at least:

  • The systemd-coredump line is indicating that the X11 server itself crashed. That basically brought down your whole graphical session along with it, and kicked you back to SDDM to start a new session
  • You’ve got NVIDIA drivers installed - what process did you follow to get those up and running, and which version do you have installed?
  • Does the issue occur if you boot with the Nouveau drivers instead?
  • Do you know specifically when this issue started, and can you see which packages had updates installed right around that time?

I don’t remember exactly how I installed the NVidia drivers.

Currently its using the 550.144.03 driver

I first started noticing the logout issue back when I first upgraded to Plasma 6. This was also with Manjaro. That was a while back. Since then, I’ve wiped my install, put in new drives, and reinstalled. That was about 6 months ago when I reinstalled. That was when I would have selected the proprietary drivers, which is when I’m guessing it would have installed the NVIDIA drivers. This is on the same computer, just newer drives.

I continued to notice the log outs even after having a new installation of Manjaro.

Recently, it wasn’t as often. I just did an upgrade this week and the logouts became more frequent. Instead of once every few days, to a couple of times a day.

The logouts were not happening when I was using Plasma 5.

Please consider enabling debuginfod Debuginfod - ArchWiki to get better output, sudo pacman -Sy debuginfod.
Then use coredumpctl -1 dump Xorg to get an informative backtrace.
Chances are, you should report this to Nvidia.

The stack trace starts in nvidia_drv.so, i.e the Nvidia Driver.

two of the GPUs in SLI

How is SLI support in Linux, I wonder.
This technology has been discontinued.

Sorry for asking but is Wayland any better ? I am guessing you have reasons to use X11. SLI might not work at all.

Or other desktop environment ?

Is there something else I need to do with this?

Back when I was building this computer (2014 or 2015), I’m pretty sure it said that Linux supported SLI. I haven’t kept up with changes since then, so I’m not really sure. Admittedly, its an old build, but has continued to work most of the time.

I’m assuming that its still supported as this screen shot shows that it reconginizes 2 GPUs

I also realize there is a lot more about linux than what I know.

I only use X11 because I have never been able to get Wayland to work for me. Even with a fresh install.

Thanks

Jason

Sorry I gave you the wrong command.

You will need to use coredumpctl -1 gdb Xorg and after it has processed for a while, you will see --Type <RET>.. then type Return, it will happen a few times probably.
Then when you see (gdb) line, type in bt (that’s backtrace) then Return, then the output should be more interesting.
After copy-pasting the result, something like:

                #0 0x0000794462aff334 n/a (libc.so.6 + 0x96334)
                #1 0x0000794462aa6120 raise (libc.so.6 + 0x3d120)
                #2 0x0000794462a8d4c3 abort (libc.so.6 + 0x244c3)
                #3 0x00005bdc5951b47e n/a (n/a + 0x0)
                #4 0x00005bdc5951c977 n/a (n/a + 0x0)
                #5 0x00005bdc59523938 n/a (n/a + 0x0)
                #6 0x0000794462aa61d0 n/a (libc.so.6 + 0x3d1d0)
                #7 0x0000794461cb0b75 n/a (nvidia_drv.so + 0x4b0b75)

Hit Ctrl+D to exit gdb.

I’m assuming that its still supported as this screen shot shows that it reconginizes 2 GPUs

A status UI won’t tell you how good the support is.
Might just be regressions in new driver versions for SLI, since NVIDIA probably doesn’t test it much especially for their Linux support.

I also realize there is a lot more about linux than what I know.

Users shouldn’t have to deal with this kind of issues, but until the issues are fixed, users can help finding them.

I only use X11 because I have never been able to get Wayland to work for me. Even with a fresh install.

Probably the NVIDIA driver didn’t implement SLI support for Wayland. Just a guess.

Just to confirm, yep: Wayland support for the 565 release series - Linux - NVIDIA Developer Forums

The following features will not be supported on Wayland or Xwayland:

  • Implicit SLI Mosaic
** This feature refers to when an application presents to a virtual display which is tiled across multiple physical displays.
** Please see below for how “Explicit SLI” will be supported.

The following features will instead be available through Vulkan Direct to Display:

  • Vulkan Explicit SLI
** Will be supported through VK_KHR_device_group

And KWin does not run with vulkan, this will come, but not anytime soon.

after trying coredumpctl -1 gdb Xorg I get this

There’s no option to do any of the options you listed after that.

So from what has been said in this thread, SLI is not being supported. Do I just need to remove a card and go with using one video card? It sounds as if it is just a waste of electricity at this point
Jason

You’d need to install gdb first.

Seems like a good idea, but I can’t tell you what to do.
AFAICT very few games can take advantage of SLI these days, and the desktop has plenty of GPU power with a single 970.

You can also upgrade to Plasma 6.3 and see if that changes anything.

Same issue.

My operating system is ArchLinux 6.12.13-1-lts, Plasma 6.3.0 X11.

Do you have an SLI setup too ?

Can you follow the steps Random Log Outs - #8 by meven to get a good understanding of the issue.

No, I only have one RTX 3090 GPU and two monitors connected. This issue seems not exist under Wayland. I will try your suggestions after finishing my current works (I have to switch to Wayland to continue my work although Wayland is more unstable in some ways :joy:).

So it does not seem the same bug as @SaltyMedic .

There is an infinite recursive loop starting in miPointerUpdateSprite function at ../xorg-server/mi/mipointer.c:431, this relates to your usage of vnc it seems.

With this nice backtrace you can report the bug to X11 developers.

I don’t think this has any to do with KDE software.

As a workaround you could try to use RDP with krpd for instance.

Thanks for your help. I’ll consider the workaround and report the bug elsewhere.
