A problem I have not seen in a couple of years is back. I plugged in a third monitor for testing after simplifying my hardware by reducing the graphics cards down to a single card. As soon as I did that, my widgets appeared on the new monitor (3), not the one they were set on (2).
Upon reboot, the widgets started appearing on random screens, and of course the layout was scrambled. I unplugged the 3rd monitor, reset the widgets, but then suddenly upon reboot and login, all the widgets are in the top right corner, one on top the other. If I rearrange the layout back to the way it should be, it scrambles again on the next login. The weather widget loses its settings including transparency and service provider.
Upon login it the widgets sometimes appear on screen 1, then move over to screen two (but they are all jumbled together in the top left corner of screen 1 before they move over) or, they are all jumbled together at the top of screen 2 and then expand downward and to the right.
I also noticed that the application dashboard start button app is an older layout, one from months ago. I remember it well because I set it that way in Plasma 5 when you could still re-arrange the icons by drag and drop, where in Plasma 6 I cannot, and as apps got moved in and out of favorites they became disordered. Now I am back to the original order.
I took a look through all the configs I have found and it appears there is a pile of garbage left in them. It is still setting up the PC to use five screens, when there are only two attached, and there are a pile of stale geometries left over from when I was using lower resolution screens in the past. There are panel entries for panels that do not exist.
At this point, I think I need to clear out all of Plasma configs to get rid of all the stale garbage left over from previous sessions.
So far I have identified the following files in mu user account as full of garbage:
koutputconfig.json
kwinrc
kwinrulesrc
plasma-org…desktop-appletsrc (has strings of over 110,000 characters)
plasmashellrc
systemsettingsrc
xdg-desktop-portal-kderc
There are probably more than I have missed.
How do I clean out all this stale garbage from ancient sessions and get my desktop to behave again? Basically, how do I reset plasma completely (both system wide, and local user account), without wiping out everything else in my user account?
